In Windows 2000 Pro: The Missing Manual, bestselling Windows NT author Sharon Crawford provides the friendly, authoritative book that should have been in the box. It's the ideal (and desperately needed) user's guide for the world's most popular corporate operating system.
Full Description
- Getting started. The early chapters cover using menus, finding lost files, reducing window clutter, and taming the wild Start menu.
- What's what. A complete guide, this book explains the purpose of every Control Panel item, accessory program, and maintenance tool.
- Mastering the network. Special chapters help you navigate the corporate network, dial in from the road, and even set up your own small-office (peer-to-peer) network, step by step.
- Understanding security. User accounts, file encryption, and the NTFS file system keep your private files private, while still offering network access to coworkers you specify.
- Flying the Net. This book demystifies the rich Internet suite of Windows 2000 Pro: its email, newsgroup, Web-browsing, and video conferencing programs.

Windows 2000 Pro: The Missing Manual Review, March 25 2001
I bought this book based on O'Reilly's reputation and I was not let down. If you are experienced or a novice this book will stand you in good stead. Clearly written and to the point it is far superior to the guides that Microsoft publishes. I bought this book and a guide from Microsoft. After starting the Missing Manual I put down the Microsoft book. You will do yourself a service by reading this book and keeping it handy.
Media reviews
"One of the beauties of the Missing Manuals is that there is always something new to discover and the research is quite thorough...I kept finding snippets of information, in the way of Tips or Notes, that would give just that bit extra."
-- Graham K. Rogers, Bangkok Post
"There are a lot of good books, but I keep returning to the
Missing Manual series because they are inexpensive, easy to read and full of cool tricks and tips."
-- Bob Brooks, The South Bay Apple Mac User Group
"Pogue, the New York Times computer columnist, is among the world's best explainers."
-- Kevin Kelly, co-founder of Wired
"I would rather go without food for three days than miss any of the Missing Manual books."
--Al Fasodt of "The Post-Standard," June 5, 2003
"If you're going to Windows 2000 I strongly recommend two O'Reilly books. 'Windows 2000 Pro -- The Missing Manual' by Sharon Crawford, and 'Windows 2000 Administration in a Nutshell' by Mitch Tulloch. If you need help these don't supply, you probably need a guru."
--Jerry Pournelle, Byte.com, Dec 3, 2001
"I confess, I was skeptical. When I picked up this 400+ page, inch-thick book that claimed to be a manual for using Windows 2000 Professional, I didn't believe it. Now, however, I'm surprised that Microsoft doesn't contact the publisher and arrange to have a copy included in retail boxes of the operating system. One of the strengths of this book is the author's style. I found the book actually fun and entertaining, which is sometime difficult to do for technical topics. Which reminds me of a second strength of this book, which is that it takes a technical topic and makes it easy for non-techies to understand. This is actually a book that could be read cover to cover. The author also did a great job of maintaining the focus of the book. By this I mean that while each topic is discussed in complete enough detail, no topic gets bogged down or over dissected."
--Douglas Ludens, Focus on Windows 2000/NT, March 2001
