Distinctive covers complement our distinctive approach to technical topics, breathing personality and life into potentially dry subjects. The animals on the cover of Practical VoIP Using VOCAL are snipefish. There are about 10 or 12 species of snipefish, living mainly in tropical, subtropical, and temperate waters--just about all over the world, in other words--and eating small marine animals. Their distinguishing characteristic is a long, tubular snout, which starts out short and stubby but lengthens as the fish grows to its maximum size of up to 30 centimeters. Their tiny jaw, sans teeth, is at the very end of the snout. Some snipefish, such as the ones on the cover, also have a long, pointed spine stretching back from the dorsal fin. Jane Ellin was the production editor, Norma Emory was the copyeditor, and Audrey Doyle was the proofreader for Practical VoIP Using VOCAL. Darren Kelly, Sue Willing, and Phil Dangler provided production assistance. Lucie Haskins wrote the index.

Ellie Volckhausen designed the cover of this book, based on a series design by Edie Freedman. The cover image is a 19th-century engraving from the Dover Pictorial Archive. Emma Colby produced the cover layout with QuarkXPress 4.1 using Adobe's ITC Garamond font.

David Futato designed the interior layout. The book ws covnerted to FrameMaker 5.5.6 with a format conversion tool created by Erik Ray, Jason McIntosh, Neil Walls, and Mike Sierra that uses Perl and XML technologies. The text font is Linotype Birka; the heading font is Adobe Myriad Condensed; and the code font is LucasFont's TheSans Mono Condensed. The illustrations that appear in the book were produced by Robert Romano and Jessamyn Read using Macromedia FreeHand 9 and Adobe Photoshop 6. The tip and warning icons were drawn by Christopher Bing.
