This has been my web design bible for the last five years and I recommend it to all of the members of my user group who are new to web programming. Although it was not written for .NET programmers, it is an excellent introduction and reference for the concepts that new .NET programmers need before they can work in ASP.NET.

An excellent book,  February 08 2005

This is the first book on web design I ever bought, and is still the one I refer to the most. Clearly written, comprehensive and well balanced. I am looking forward to the 3rd edition.

The title of this book says it all, and the fact that the title practices what it preaches is a good indication of what follows between the covers.

This book is not just about HTML, nor is it just about design principles. It covers everything from browser platforms to server concepts to accessibility issues, then goes on to discuss HTML, and perhaps most importantly, cascading style sheets. Jennifer Niederst is careful to include all the HTML tags that we have come to know and love, but warns us off if they are depricated, so there is no mistake about current standards.

I have "made do" with the chapter on style sheets for nearly a year now, and I am finally having to break down and buy a more difinitive book on the subject. That the single chapter on CSS has got me by for this long is testament to the author. It is thorough and very easy to read.

The book also covers topics like Audio and Video on the web, and introduces JavaScript, DHTML, XML and XHTML among others.

I have several O'Reilly books on my shelf, and I refer to them all from time to time, but this one lives on my desktop. No sooner do I put it away than I've pulled it out again. I may need to buy a new one when this copy falls apart. Thank you Jennifer, for a truly outstanding book.

This is a truely well done book. Chapters start with a syntax of tags, then about 10+ pages of guide to using the tags for developing content. Also, for more advanced concept, there are short scripts that you can try at home.

Thanks for help. This is my central source for developing HTML.

Media reviews "A dense reference manual is one that has a wealth of information that's easily accessible in a small volume. A dense reference manual is one that will fit in your briefcase. These do. 'Dense' is good. Is it time for the titles? 'Webmaster in a Nutshell' is one. The other is 'Web Design in a Nutshell'. I've read a lot of books over the years, but these two are indispensable. I take them home. I take them back to the office. I read them in bed. (OK. You already knew I was a geek, but this is stretching it even for geeks. I have, though, read them in bed.)... The book covers just about everything a web site designer should know, from how GIFs work to why colors are a nightmare. And for every explanation of a technique that might make your life easier, there's an additional explanation of the disadvantages. Web site design is all about making decisions. About choosing the solution that's best today. It may have shortcomings. It may not be the best solution tomorrow, but you have to finish your work today. With today's browsers, you need to know what works (most of the time) and what may not work so well with some browsers. If you like making intelligent, informed decisions, then this is an excellent book to add to your library."--Bill Blinn, Technology Corner, Jan 25, 2003

"The reference that a web designer would turn to most often...a concise compendium of just about everything a web designer needs to know."
--Major Kearny, PC Update, Dec 2002

"This is a great book for the price, easy to use and packed with valuable information."
--Joyce J. Evans, January 2003
