Book description

This concise guide offers the basic concepts of IP routing, free of hype and jargon. It begins with the simplest routing protocol, RIP, and then proceeds in successive chapters to IGRP, EIGRP, RIP2, OSPF, and finally to the most complex, BGP. Full Description

This concise guide offers the basic concepts of IP routing, free of hype and jargon. It begins with the simplest routing protocol, RIP, and then proceeds, in order of complexity, to IGRP, EIGRP, RIP2, OSPF, and finally to BGP. New concepts are presented one at a time in successive chapters. By the end, you will have mastered not only the fundamentals of all the major routing protocols, but also the underlying principles on which they are based. The basic information in IP Routing is designed to help you begin configuring protocols for Cisco routers. Although author Ravi Malhotra assumes that readers have a basic understanding of TCP/IP and are somewhat familiar with Cisco router configurations, he also assumes that you find some or all of these protocols difficult to work with. His book presents concepts simply, as nuts and bolts. Malhotra's use of plain language, analogy, and the recurring example of an imaginary network, which grows in complexity as the book progresses, will help you understand fundamental concepts behind each protocol. Once you master these concepts, you will benefit from the detailed information contained in Cisco manuals and web pages (such as bug lists, new features, design guides, etc). Depending on your skill level, you can either read IP Routing from cover to cover or use it as a reference for any of the protocols presented. The book describes administrative tools available to all the routing protocols, including those that block the advertisement of routing updates, and those that set up preferences for one routing protocol over another. Honed by years of teaching Data Communications at major universities and managing IP networks in production environments, Ravi Malhotra's knowledge of this subject makes IP Routing is the ideal primer to Internet routing protocols.

Indeed this book contains lots of errors, fortunately I got most questions answered by author himself - I am the translater of this book in traditional Chinese version :-D. For those who are not so lucky, the 2nd print may be a better choice for English readers. As t-Chinese and Japanese readers, you are so lucky since our translations had corrected lots of errors. Japanese version's translater Mr. Shimizu (hope I spelled correctly) did an excellent job and he found most errors in examples codes which I never took time to read them carefully.

Anyway this still helped me a lot. During translation I was preparing my CCNP certification, and author's description is more interesting than Cisco manual's boring sentences. I used this book as a preview for routing course, after reading it I felt it's much more easier for me to understand Cisco's book - these 2 books works together perfectly. Though new version of CCNP routing test had added some new topics such as ISIS and NAT...etc., you still can find useful information in Ravi's little book. I will suggest people to use this book as a beginning reading, when you doubt the integrity of some descriptions, then it's the time you should get a Cisco's book to compare with.

I agree with the other reviewer - too many mistakes !!! I think that O'Reilly should either reprint the book or refund our money. The book could be a 5 star animal, if only there were not so many mistakes!

I just bought the book and read 20+ pages. There are too many errors. So many that I can hardly proceed. I then print out the Errata pages and this amounts to 16 pages.

Errors are forgivable, but that many errors from a reputable publisher is not.

Note that I am reading the first print, the second print (October 2002) should be much better.

"One of the book’s strongest points in my opinion is in its writing style, and attention to detail. The author has done an excellent job of using visual cues such as diagrams, and showing a good amount of command line usage to help reinforce the subject matter. Further more the command line usage examples are geared towards Cisco router products, which makes perfect sense to me, as they are the de-facto leader in routers worldwide. This gives the reader some concrete examples which they can use, and or experiment with. Included also in the book are some actual examples of the routing packet itself showing the internal fields. This greatly helps the reader to visualize what the packet itself looks like...Overall the book is an excellent resource for someone looking to gain a deeper understanding of how routing protocols work...both Interior and Exterior routing protocols are covered. This gives the book a more balanced approached to this topic...This book gets an SFDC 8/10 from me"

"A useful book for those in the networking field or those wishing to migrate between protocols."

"a straight-forward, jargon free introduction...readers will master not only the fundamentals of all major routing protocols, but also the principals on which the protocols are based."
