Review of Google Missing Manual, June 05 2004
A lot of people use Google and use it a lot. And while Google doesn't come in a box,
it's reasonable to think of this book
as the manual you would want
to have found in the box,
if Google did come in a box.
Unless you are a programmer,
this book likely addresses
what you need to know about Google.
If you are a programmer
and wish to use a program to access Google
or Google pages,
I recommend the "Google Hacks" book.
You may wish to take a look at my review of it.
If you want more, you may wish
to take a look at my somewhat longer review.
Media reviews
"One of the beauties of the Missing Manuals is that there is always something new to discover and the research is quite thorough...I kept finding snippets of information, in the way of Tips or Notes, that would give just that bit extra."
-- Graham K. Rogers, Bangkok Post
"I have reviewed quite a number of Missing Manual books and I am always impressed with them. David Pogue is a Mac master and the depth of his knowledge shines through."
-- Roger Bernau, ACT Apple User Group Incorporated
"Google: The Missing Manual is a must-read for anyone who wants to make Google work harder, faster, and more effectively. This easy to read book doesn't get bogged down in boring techno-babble, and engages the reader with simple explanations of somewhat complicated processes...Bottom line: I recommend this book to anyone who's ever been on the Web and who's ever used Google."
--Wendy Boswell, Websearch, About.com, May 2005
"Google doesn't come shrink-wrapped or in a fancy box, so it is not surprising there is no manual. There have been some books published, but if you want a proper manual Pogue Press's Google: The Missing Manual is the book to have. An advantage of the Missing Manuals is that program shortcomings are pointed out, which is rare in vendor documentation."
--Major Keary, Book Notes, 2004:18
"Anyone who finds themselves doing lots of searches -- such as students, teachers, writers, librarians, analysts -- will certainly find ways of finding information faster, and doing more efficient searches, by reading this book."
--Bruce Kratofil, Blogcritics.org, July 2004
"Every book I have in the Missing Manual series takes up prime shelf space in my collection of computer advice epics, and this one didn't disappointment. The book covers everything from the basic s to getting Google to generate hits to your Web site. Plus it demystifies the inner workings of the search engine...Plus it's a fun read. The authors' use of humor makes it extremely easy to absorb what otherwise might be dull, boring data."
--Mike Berman, Scripps Howard News Service, July 2004
"Strengths: It is an O'Reilly book! Weaknesses: None found...This book is a book of discovery--much like Google.com itself."
--John Nemerovsky, MacCompanion.com, July 2004
"You may think you're a Google wizard, but chances are you're not tapping the full potential. With this book, you can learn how to turn Google into your second brain and personal research assistant."
--Thomas "Duffbert" Duff, Portland Domino/Notes User Group, June 2004
"My initial reaction when I picked up this book was that as a power user of Google it would only contain a few items that I didn't already know. I could not have been more wrong...If you have an Internet connection and you do anything with Google you should get a copy of this book. When you are done reading it you will have a new respect for Google and how it can make your life easier is so many ways, including a lot of different uses besides as an Internet search engine."
--Harold McFarland, Midwest Book Review, August 2004
"For someone quite unexperienced with the Internet or those seeking to gain expertise in Google services and broaden their research skills, though, it is a useful, fun-to-read title. It's not expensive either, so while I think for most of the geeks it's redundant, it would be a good gift for those in the family who keep calling and asking questions that begin with 'Where do I find...?'"
--Alex Moskalyuk, Slashdot.org, July 2004
"This is a book for ordinary people who need accurate information fast but do not speak Geek."
--Stock Index Online, June 2004
"'Google: The Missing Manual' by Sarah Milstein and Rael Dornfest...is a must-have for Google fans. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Google, but then spent hours learning more from this book...Milstein -- who has contributed tips for WebTips in the past -- is a freelance writer and has a way of explaining things in a an easy to understand manner."
--Sree Sreenivasan, Poynter Online , June 2004
