Very good book, as long as you have not upgraded to CS2, June 02 2005
I found his book (and CD) very good. His lesson planning was excellent. However, as I am using CS2 versus a later edition of CS software, was not able to use the shortcuts, etc., that he provided for the book.
Am also disappointed that his Photoshop CS2 will not be released until August.
Very good book for a Photoshop novice like me, August 27 2004
The book is very well-written and easy to read. I can see the immediate impact on my pictures after reading each lesson. The author takes you straight to the important functionality (and skip the useless or less powerful features which glut the Photoshop interface). I've rarely felt so empowered just by reading a book. Kudos Deke !
One wish is that the book would give more than one example for each technique (may be as a separate exercice at the end of each chapter, to avoid disrupting the flow). Also I haven't found the videos to be that useful to watch. They seem to be more like a advertisement to entice you to buy additional video lessons.
But these are small minuses considering how much I've learned in a few hours of reading the book and doing the exercices.
Highly recommended !

Adobe Photoshop CS One-on-One Review, April 03 2004
If you want to learn Photoshop from the ground up, this is a
publication of great value
Photoshop is an essential, powerful, and sometimes a bit overwhelming imaging manipulation tool. OReillys Adobe Photoshop CS One-on-One clears the fog, taking you from graphics newbie to Photoshop warrior, under the watchful, easygoing guidance of Photoshop master Deke McClelland. This full-color book, which is accompanied by nearly two hours of video tutorials on CD, is an up-close and personal training experience. Deke's classroom approach takes you step-by-step through real-world projects that help you gain Photoshop proficiency. Along the way, you'll get a good dose of graphics theory, best practices, and tips for avoiding Photoshop disasters.
This one-of-a-kind approach fills a gap in the available literature and delivers a unique learning experience.
After reading many of the easy-to-understand chapters and looking at the very well done CD, I felt that my personal skills had definitely been improved substantially. At the outset of each book-based lesson, it was very helpful to play the accompanying video lesson from the CD, which I would highly recommend to anyone trying to learn this program.

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS one-on-one
Book Review By: Diana F. Arsenault</blockquote>
It doesnt seem fair to even refer to this book as a book. Its much more than just a book!
Deke McClelland is known worldwide as a Photoshop Master.
The things he does with Photoshop are simply magical and he does them with
such style and grace! He makes things that I previously considered extremely
difficult as simple as saying 1 2 3. He is truly a MASTER!
This is actually a one-on-one visual classroom with two hours of video instruction on the accompanying CD. The minimum requirements for this classroom are:
1. Adope Photoshop CS Software.
2. 256MB of RAM.
3. 650MB of free hard disk space (350MB for Photoshop and 350MB for the One-on-One
project and video application files).
4. Color monitor with 16-bit color video card.
5. 1,024 by 768-pixel monitor resolution.
6. CD-ROM drive.
7. Apples QuickTime Player Software version 5.0.2 or higher.
8. PLUS you must install all sample files, total training video training software, One-on-One
Photoshop preference settings, color settings and keyboard shortcuts (optional but recommended).
One-on-One includes the following 12 Lessons:
1. File management and navigation. File Browser. Contact Sheet II and PDF Presentation.
2. Brightness and contrast. Levels, curves, histogram and shadow/highlight commands.
3. Color balance, variations, hue/saturation and camera raw.
4. Selection tools. Select menu. Paths Palette.
5. Crop and transform. Image size. Canvas size.
6. Painting and retouching. Paint brush and healing brush. Color replacement tools. History palettes.
7. Masking functions. Color range and extract commands. Channels palette.
8. Focus adjustments. Unsharp mask, Gaussian Blur, Median and High Pass filters.
9. Layer functions and palettes. Layer menu and blending options.
10. Text and shape layers. Character and paragraph palettes and warp text.
11. Layer styles and adjustment layers. Drop shadow, bevel, emboss and the styles palette.
12. Print functions. Color settings and picture package commands.
This One-on-One classroom is setup for you to read the lesson, watch the video and then perform the step-by-step exercises which teach you Photoshops most powerful and essential functions.
In the words of the Master, Deke McClelland, This book is here to take you on that journey of pain and reward. Sure, there may be occasional times when youll wonder if Photoshop is Adobes idea of the Nine Circles of Hell. But just as Dante emerged from the lowest circle by climbing down the very Devil himself, well conquer Photoshop by descending directly into it and coming out the other side. We will make peace with Photoshop through understanding, the understanding borne by knowledge, the knowledge wrought by experience. Take heart, kindred spirit; mastery will be yours.
It was a great pleasure to review this book and I feel honored to have spent this time with the MASTER!

"A great mix of step-by-step tutorials with discussions of underlying issues. This will raise the skill level of all but the Photoshop experts--and even they might learn a thing or two."
-- Major Keary, Book Notes
"Often reviewing a how-to manual, is a dull experience, because of the step-by-step dry nature of it. Deke McClelland kept the text light, and his distinctive personality certainly shone through. There is something here for everyone, of all levels, to learn."

"I've got a lot of Deke McClelland books on my shelf...But folks, I seriously believe this is Deke's finest hour. This book is simply wonderful. There's not a dull or fluffed page in nearly 500 pages. Seriously...As a Photoshop author, I hate picking up a book and learning things I didn't already know. But Deke's done it to me again! If you want to learn Photoshop from the ground up, look no further...'Photoshop CS One-on-One' is accessible to complete beginners while still offering tips and secrets that even the most experienced Photoshop users won't know....As a Photoshop user myself, and instructor of Photoshop at James Madison University, I believe this book will help all digital artists enjoy the enormous task of mastering Photoshop. "There is something for everyone here. Deke's wit, literary allusions and breezy writing style help turn a cumbersome, complicated and sometimes mysterious computer application into a tamable beast. "If you use Photoshop and want to learn how to utilize it to the fullest, you owe it to yourself to check out this book."
--Thomas Duff, twduff.com, May 2004
"Being a tutor and teacher of Photoshop at classroom level, I am always looking for new tutorial ideas or to find that better way to describe a Photoshop function. This book saves the day! It is divided into handy and relevant chapter topics for the reader to either jump to or start the lessons in sequence...The book really is one-on-one as the title says. You, the reader, feel, especially when watching the video that Deke is really talking to you. His manner is conversational and 'down-to-earth,' even having a joke or two along the way. This makes the book enjoyable to read and comprehend. I would recommend this book to anyone starting to learn Photoshop. "
Rating: 5 out of 5
--Sarah Markland, Northern Tasmania Macromedia Users Group, May 2004
"Though the book is focused on the newest Photoshop, CS (version 8.0), I found that most of the examples worked equally well with my Photoshop 5.0 on Windows and Photoshop 6.0 on the Mac. I really liked the comfortable writing style, and the fact that the author embeds his own opinions into the text. That's important -- you don't want someone to just tell you how to use Unsharp; you want someone who will tell you why you would want to use Unsharp over the other Sharp filters (even though he will also demonstrate these, too)...This book will be particularly good for someone who wants to learn some nifty new tricks with Photoshop--including good examples working with the layers, which I don't use probably as much as I should...The images in the book are wonderful, and the production quality is above average. Good book, could definitely recommend for all beginning to beginning/intermediate Photoshop users."

Whether you have been using Photoshop CS since its release last year, or if you are just getting ready to make the plunge, learning Photoshop will be easier with this book at your side. I highly recommend it."
