This Windows-only book gently eases beginning digital photographers into
the rapidly evolving and exciting world of digital photography, without
overwhelming them with technical detail. It also provides support to both
amateur and proficient film photographers who are transitioning from their
previous comfort zone of traditional shooting to new territory with
unfamiliar vocabulary, methods, and hardware. Who could possibly be more
welcoming to these beginners than David Pogue, who wrote the enticing
introduction to this Missing Manual? In his typically refreshing blend of
easy-to-understand language, touch of humor, and genuine enthusiasm, Pogue
magically engages the reader and assures subsequent
absorption of the book from cover-to-cover.

In the Introduction, David Pogue explains that the book is comprised of four
parts, each containing several chapters. The First Section, Digital Camera
Basics, assists in the decision of what type of digital camera
best suits which needs, and then how to learn to use the features of that
choice. The differences between digital and film photography
are reviewed, and easily implemented tips for taking great photos in
different kinds of situations and environments are provided. The Second
Section, Organizing Your Photos, focuses on different options for storing,
organizing and retrieving photos on the computer and on the Internet.
Section Three looks at Editing Your Photos using the computer and software
programs (as opposed to previously using a darkroom and sending jobs out to
a photo lab). Basics of removing red eye, blemishes, cropping, and more
advanced topics like creating panoramas from multiple photos are reviewed.
Finally, Section Four explores sharing digital photos, printing photos at home, ordering prints through online services, and ordering specialty items such as photo books, calendars, and other photo items.

While this book is intended for Windows users, much of the content is
enriching for any beginning digital photographer, regardless of platform.
This is especially true of digital camera features, lighting and
flash options, explanations of resolution for printing, memory card
varieties, and editing considerations. The beginner is also advised to learn
to take risks in trying different creative techniques and options, since it
is easy to just erase mistakes. Tips are given for shooting
vacation photos, weddings and celebrations, sunset and night
photos, indoor flash photography, sports and action shots, and special
effects. The techniques of rotating, resizing, and other editing and enhancing are introduced to the beginner for a taste of the next level in photo manipulation.

Digital Photography: The Missing Manual has many detailed and colorful
illustrations, as well as an excellent index (typical of this series). The authors
do an excellent job of organizing the basic essential information for a
beginner to get started in digital photography. The
content of this book will surely serve as a firm foundation for the beginner to develop confidence to acquire effective digital photography skills.

"The Missing Manual series is known for clear writing garnished with gentle humor, and this book is no exception. For example, image stabilization (a.k.a. vibration reduction) is explained thusly: It “improves your photos’ clarity by ironing out your little hand jiggles.” The entire first four chapters alone would make an excellent book, as they thoroughly explain how to use a digital camera, take outstanding photographs, and get those images onto your computer. I had to read a number of sources to acquire the breadth of knowledge presented here...The ideal reader of Digital Photography: The Missing Manual is someone who either is just about to take the plunge into digital photography or has been using a digital camera for snapshots but now wants improved results."
-- Carol Conti-Entin, Mouse Tales

-- Focus, Rangefinder

"Digital SLR users just starting out or looking to increase their skills will learn helpful tips and tricks in this guide."
-- PCPhoto, Dec. 2006

"As we go into the holidays, digital cameras are on many wish lists, and even if you already have a camera, this full color book will definitely enhance your skills. Mac or PC, this book takes an approach that will help you choose the best camera for you & get high quality results from it. "
-- Jonathan Cost, thinkmac.net

"With a good camera, good photo editing software, and a good photo-quality printer, everything I could ever do with film and a darkroom can be done digitally, with less mess and often more easily -- assuming I'm able to figure out just how to do it. That's where Digital Photography: The Missing Manual by Chris Grover and Barbara Brundage shines. The instruction guides that come with digital cameras and editing software are usually quite brief. They give a one or two line explanation of menu items and a quick overview of basic functions...All of the tutorials and tips in The Missing Manual are accompanied by both screen shots and step-by-step instructions. Some of the techniques are easy and some are not, but with practice, all can be mastered. If you would like to hear "ooh, ah, and wow" from your family and friends when you pass around your photos, this is the book for you."
-- Gil Hennon, Memphis PC Users Group

"The information in the book is straight forward, easily understood, and applied. Novices to digital photography, the computer, or both, would find this book helpful both in getting started taking digital photos, and in working with them afterward. Computer newbies will appreciate the basic information about storing, moving and deleting photos as well as detailed how-to instructions along with illustrations about how to obtain, install and use freely available products. The tables that compare features in each of the freely available products as well as the $100 product provides readers enough information to make decisions about which product will meet their needs now and in the future. With this book, a beginner could invest only in a camera and experiment with software that is free."
-- Linda Thede, Greater Cleveland PC Users Group

"The authors have done an excellent job at taking the novice through all of the steps of digital photography. The whole gamut is covered, beginning with camera selection and ending with sharing your photos. The full color examples add clarity and enhance the pages throughout the entire book...Whether you are giving a camera as a gift, or if you are aspiring to learn more about digital photography, this book is a must."
