Full Description

In every PC user's life, there's a point when desperate measures must be taken. Some push their PC off a pier or chuck it into a landfill. Others turn their former computing ally into a planter box. But don't give up on your PC yet--help is at hand. This easy to read, accessible book from PC World expert Steve Bass covers the waterfront of PC gripes and gremlins, with fixes for everything from Windows glitches to browsers that won't browse. Each fix is served up in bite-sized portions for quick reading--and even quicker fixing. A revised version of its best-selling predecessor, the 2nd edition offers 50 additional pages and over 120 new fixed annoyances. This reader-friendly book tackles problems related to a wide-ranging number of topics:
  • Windows--King of Annoyances! learn how to kick Windows in the rear, overcome glitches, take charge of the interface, live with the dreaded Service Pack 2
  • Hardware--wake up your DSL, tame your notebook, silence your PC's fan, work wonders with your scanner, and save paper
  • Email--from Outlook to Eudora! Defeat spam, avoid mailing list hassles, send big files, manage folders
  • Microsoft Office--learn workarounds for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that help you back up the unbackable and automate data entry
  • Internet--shake up IE, stop Flash, outsmart defaults, control Favorites, add the Google toolbar to Netscape
Plus, you get access to more than one hundred utilities that will help you squash bugs, enhance your email, untangle a system snarl, and much more. If your PC has ever annoyed you (do we see several billion raised hands?), PC Annoyances is for you. With the flip of a page or two, you can fix that faux pas and have your PC purring again.

Just purchased 2nd edition (at one of the big bookstore chains) and I am really enjoying it.  There are so many handy tools out there that are not always so easy to find.  This book rocks!

I purchased the book PC Annoyances, 2nd Edition and I have to say I just love it. I thinks it is one of the best purchases I ever made. I am
really interested in computer security because I was hacked 4 years ago by the same person 3 times. Since then I have tried to learn everything I can about computer security.

This is by far one of the easiest books to understand. It gives you step by step instructions and the best part is all the links it gives you to free programs. I think one of my favorite programs is the one that makes
spammers think you do not exist because you can send them a fake bounce back email.

This is one book that I would totally recommend for everyone to purchase. Even people with little knowledge of computers will still understand this easy to read book.

Go get this book - now. Mr. Bass has added new material to an already prize-worthy publication. For instance he has considerably expanded the Windows chapter which now includes XP service pack 2. And once again, even though I live in MS Office, I have to admit I learned a few gems!

There’s very little from the first edition missing in this second edition. That tells me PC annoyances are not going away, there are just more to come - a big “ouch” for us. But a big thanks to Steve Bass for once again creating a valuable reference that is also fun and entertaining. Unfortunately for us his work will never be done! Bravo Steve!

Received your new book (PC Annoyances 2nd Ed) yesterday. I was going to wait a couple weeks after I returned from a trip to read it, but decided to give it a look-through. Am glad I did!

Some items that jumped out when just glancing through book: AOL, p.19+ (yes, I use AOL); Protect your system from dumb installations, p. 62; Skip the registration, p. 92; Buying Online? Play it safe, p. 93—and I could go on. Really like the extra info in the boxes too.

I’m going to take this book with me on the plane as my reading material. Thanks for writing it.
