Mosr excellent!, September 11 2006
When people think of Google, they think of a place to search for various items. And while Google could be considered the definitive search engine, it's so much more. This updated edition of Google: The Missing Manual proves that. While the book's first two chapters discuss the Google search engine and ways to make your searching more fun, there's a lot more to Google.
You can also use Google to find locations by using Google Images and Maps. Or use Froogle to find a good buy on various items you're looking for. There's also a wealth of information for WebMasters about Google, like making your site easier fore the Google searh bots to find, or finding out how many are visiting your site per day or week. And of course there's Google Mail (also known as Gmail), which allows you 2 GB of free space. All of these Google features are well described in this book.
This is a wonderful resource if you spend a lot of time using Google.

"Google: The Missing Manual," second edition, by Sarah Milstein, J.D. Biersdorfer and Matthew MacDonald (O'Reilly, $25), begins with a full explanation of Google's search engine and how to use it effectively to get the results you're seeking. Then it covers Google Images, News, Maps and many of Google's other Web helpers."
-- Linda Knapp, The Seattle Times
"In this scrupulously objective, wise and witty guide, Sarah Milstein and Rael Dornfest deliver the complete scoop on Google, from how it works to how you can search far more effectively and efficiently...Whether you're new to Google or already a many-times-a-day user, you're sure to find tutorials, tips, tricks, and tools that take you well beyond simple search to Google gurudom."
-- The First Coast Mac, North Florida Macintosh Users Group
"One of the beauties of the Missing Manuals is that there is always something new to discover and the research is quite thorough...I kept finding snippets of information, in the way of Tips or Notes, that would give just that bit extra."
-- Graham K. Rogers, Bangkok Post
"While it's true you can dig around on the Google site and find all this stuff ("why buy a book for it?"), I much prefer to have that type of information packaged up for me. Also, since Google changes daily, there's always the issue of things being gone or substantially revised by the time you read about it. Still, *knowing* that a feature exists is the first step in learning how it works. This is a book that will remain close to my home computer, and one that I'll browse through on a regular basis to get those "I missed that feature!" moments... "
-- Thomas Duff, Duffbert's Random Musings
"There are a lot of good books, but I keep returning to the Missing Manual series because they are inexpensive, easy to read and full of cool tricks and tips."
-- Bob Brooks, The South Bay Apple Mac User Group
"The book is written in a folksy style, easy to read and understand. There is an illustration of each screen discussed. Every page has an inserted Tip or Note to facilitate the use of that feature. For me it will reside near my computer for handy refer"
-- Morg Henika, Tuscan Computer Society
"I have never seen a manual for any program, hardware or OS which is anywhere close to this series in its helpfulness to the reader. Anyone other than the well trained techs can find this book valuable."
-- Ray Bowler, Vice President, Des Moines Macintosh User's Group
""More" is what this book delivers; it's bung-full of tutorials, tips, tricks, and tools that take you well beyond simple search to Google gurudom. As the authors Sarah Milstein, J.D. Biersdorfer,, and Matthew MacDonald note in their introductory teaser, "Most people who use Google every day have no idea why the results include links named "cached" or "similar pages"... I admit that I didn't. "Practically nobody knows what happens when you throw the term inurl into your search string - but it's a very handy trick." I couldn't wait to get to page 67 to check it out, and it indeed did prove to be something that I will use now that I know about it...If you're a serious user of Google and/or Gmail, or a Website operator, you'll find this book well worth the modest $24.95 price, which includes 45 days of free access to the O'Reilly's Safari Bookshelf electronic reference library."
-- Charles Moore, AppleLinks
"I have reviewed quite a number of Missing Manual books and I am always impressed with them. David Pogue is a Mac master and the depth of his knowledge shines through."
-- Roger Bernau, ACT Apple User Group Incorporated
