Visual Basic (VB) 2005 Cookbook is an excellent quick solution guide for common VB programming tasks beyond the standard or basic programming routines. Although the preface metions that it's for all levels, I'd recommend learning the basics before jumping into this. If you're a beginner, it will give you some direction on where to go and for the more advanced, it will save you time having to dig through multiple sources to get where you're going. Thankfully, you do not need to read the book from cover to cover; instead you can jump the subject you want without having to battle through non-pertinent information. The book is broken up into common sense sections and each section gets to the heart of the matter quickly. Each problem listed includes a brief description of what's to be accomplished and then provides code samples for actually completing the task. As a side benefit, the book is also available through the Safari system at the O'Reilly site. Having been in the computer industry for 20+ years, I've always found O'Reilly books to hit the mark when looking for information; VB 2005 Cookbook is no exception! I highly recommend this book.

Media reviews

"...in my life as a developer, I am constantly looking for better ways of accomplishing tasks as well as learning how to do new tasks well. To this end, I will always seek out references that will prove valuable. One of these will be Visual Basic 2005 Cookbook."
-- T. Michael Testi, Blogcritics.org

"This book, however, is a bit different. It presents hundreds of 'recipes', each solving a real-world problem. Some 'recipes' are less than a page long, while others span many pages. The cool part is this: most of these recipes stand on their own. You don't have to read them in order. You can choose the recipe that corresponds to your particular need, read it, and apply it to your own program. Sweet."
-- Jerry Dixon, Jerry Dixon's Blog, .NET Developers Journal

"The authors provide coding recipes for accomplishing many common tasks that can save programmers many hours of work. There are more than 300 recipes that Visual Basic programmers may encounter on a regular basis. Reusable code snippets can be downloaded so that readers can apply the examples that are described in detail in the book. Solutions cover a variety of programming topics, from string and number manipulations to animations, cryptography, and matrix transformations."
-- Michael Kleper, The Kleper Report on Digital Publishing
