Head First PMP by Andrew Stellman, Jennifer Greene This errata page lists errors outstanding in the most recent printing. If you have technical questions or error reports, you can send them to booktech@oreilly.com. Please specify the printing date of your copy. This page was updated January 18, 2008. Here's a key to the markup: [page-number]: serious technical mistake {page-number}: minor technical mistake : important language/formatting problem (page-number): language change or minor formatting problem ?page-number?: reader question or request for clarification Confirmed errors: (84) under project charter sample, 1st paragraph; the "Project Description" should be in Bold {96} The icon for "Project Statement of Work" should be replaced with "Preliminary Scope Statement" (which can be found on p74) (100) under the "Exercise" "Theteachers" should be "The teachers", "Justas" should be "Just as", and "Oneof" should be "One of" (128) in question 3 answer D should be "Forecasts". {130} Question 10 Answer B; "Monitor and Control Project Execution" should be "Monitor and Control Project Work process" (134) in the explanation for answer 3, change "collected" to "turned into forecasts". [145] Top half of the page; "When people talk about scoping out their projects, ..." should be "products" [146] erd column, 1st paragraph; "You'll have to change your product scope ..." should be "project" (156) last paragraph; "Once the work is complete, you're going have to make ..." should be "you're going to have to make ..." (176) The picture has two problems. On the left-hand side, there are three icons. The one for the scope management plan needs to be replaced with a small picture of the WBS dictionary (from p174). On the right-hand side, the polaroid photo needs to be changed in the same way. The text is actually correct, it's just the illustration that's wrong. The picture of the polaroid needs to be changed on pages 177, 185, and 483 as well. [176] WSB Graphic; The WBS Dictionary is composed of (i)Scope Statement (ii)WBS (iii) WBS Dictionary and NOT (i)Scope Management Plan (ii)Project Scope (iii)WBS. (183) the machine is titled Scope Planning Process and should change to Scope Control Process. [194] point NO# 5; "... Scope Management Plan, Work Breakdown Structure, and Product Scope... " should be "... Scope Statement, Work Breakdown Structure, and WBS Dictionary ..." [206] point NO# 13; "... then decide on the best one, that's variance analysis" shuld be "alternatives analysis" {231} 2nd statement in answering the 2nd question; "singing couldn't start until after the music had started" should be "singing couldn't finish until after the music had started" (238) The following note should be added to page 238: "There are two more outputs -- requested changes (for change control) and a resource breakdown structure, which is a hierarchical chart (like a WBS) that shows all your project's resources." And the sidebar on the bottom should have "Almost All" added to the beginning: "Almost all of the outputs of Activity Resource Estimating are immediately..." (250) The critical path answers on step 3 are incorrect. Activity B and C should swap places, as should the Finish sections of the first two lines. {257} On the diagram: - It's got an extra box -- remove "Activity E". There should be one arrow going from the "Activity D" box to the "Finish" box. - The upper right annotation should point to that arrow. Its first sentence should be changed to: "The other path has a duration of 2 + 7 = 9." - The lower right annotation should point to the "Activity D" box. It should start with "That means the early start and early finish for D is really early --" (257-265) A corrected version of pages 257-265 can be found here - http://examples.oreilly.com/9780596102340/hfpmp_ch06_errata_pp257-265.pdf [259] bottom paragraph (bullet #3), p260 in the graphic for EF of Activity D; These errors concern the newly revised errata provided at the url http://examples.oreilly.com/9780596102340/ hfpmp_ch06_errata_pp257-265.pdf (259) In Bullet 3: Uh-oh! Activity C has two predecessors. Which one do you use to calculate EF? Since C canŐt start until both B and D are done, use the one with the latest EF. That means you need to figure out the EF of activity D (its ES is 1, so its EF is 1 + 2 = 3). <---this should be "EF is 1 + 2 - 1= 2" It appears correctly as 2 in the sentence after the next. Now you can move forward to Activity C and calculate its EF. The EF of Activity D is 2, which is smaller than BŐs EF of 11, so for Activity C the ES = 11 + 1 = 12, and EF = 12 + 7 - 1 = 18. [260] We left out a step in the backwards pass calculation -- the last node in every path in a network diagram has to have the same LF as the critical path (which is the latest late finish date). {260} Diagram 1 & Diagram 2; The EF of Activity D should be 2 The LS of Activity D should be 10 The LF of Activity B should be 11 The LS of Activity B should be 7 [262] 2nd to last graphic for activity E; This concerns the revised section for p 257 - 265 provided at http://examples.oreilly.com/9780596102340/ hfpmp_ch06_errata_pp257-265.pdf (262) the 2nd to last graphic depicts activity E in path D-E-H as having a duration of 6, although it's indicated as a duration of 8 in all other areas. {311} Resource Calendar, Project Schedule, Contract, and Cost Management Plan should be listed as inputs to Cost Budgeting. Enterprise Environmental Factors and Organizational Process Assets should not be listed as inputs to Cost Budgeting. [325] under the point number 3: PV; "then the Earned Value is " should be "then the Planned Value is " {333} has all the answers filled in, and it shouldn't. So in #2, "PV = 50% x $10,000 = $5,000" should be replaced with "PV = __% x $_______ = $_______" and in #3, "EV = 40% x $10,000 = $4,000" should be "EV = __% x $_______ = $_______" In #4, "SPI = $4,000 ÷ $5,000 = 0.8 SV = $4,000 - $5,000 = -$1,000" should be "SPI = $______ ÷ $_______ = ____ SV = $_______ - $______ = $_________" [334] bottom of the page - Calculating CPI & CV; "CPI= $5,000 / $5,750 = 0.869" Should be "CPI= $4,000 / $5,750 = 0.696" and "CV = $5,000 - $5,750 = -$750" should be "CV = $4,000 - $5,750 = -$1,750" [349] Calculating SV; "SV = $5000 - $4000 = $1000" should be "SV = $4000 - $5000 = -$1000" (354 and 359) in question 2, "PV (BCWP)" should be changed to "PV (BCWS)" (496) The first question asks for the kind of communication when an applicant comes late and dressed unprofessionally. The answer is nonverbal, not paralingual. (496) The second question asks for the kind of communication when the applicant is replying sarcastically. The answer is paralingual, not nonverbal. (538) The icon on the top of page 538 for Risk Response Planning shows the process group as "Monitoring & Controlling Process group". "Risk Response Planning" is part of the Planning Process group. {505} 2nd paragraph; The definition of ETC is incorrect. The last sentence of this paragraph should be: "ThatŐs why you use EAC (which helps you estimate your project's total cost) and ETC (which gives you a good idea of how much more money you think you'll spend between now and when it ends)." (552) The only "Which-is-not" question on the page: The answer to the question should be "C" (Reserve Analysis), not "D" (Monte Carlo Analysis). The explanations for both are correct, however the sentence "D has to be the answer" should be removed, since it is incorrect. "C has to be the answer". {584} FPIF, "Risks to the Buyer"; It should read "There's still not much risk to the buyer in fixed price contracts." (615) In the answer for question 10 on page 615, the last few words should be changed from "the buyer makes" to "the seller is paid".
