Excellent resource, for starters also.,  February 27 2008

I know from experience that RAW files give the best result, but getting that result requires that you know what you are doing. The enormous amount of options and settings scares most people into sticking to JPG. This book however tells you in a very intuitive way how to load, process and modify RAW files to suit your needs.

What I like most about this book is that it has a ton of screenshots showing you exactly which menuitem, slider or checkbox the author is talking about, you basically cannot misinterpret what's being said. It even offers the used images for download so you can literally sing along with the author. A great help to see if you're doing it right.

Even though the book is very easy to read, the author does still go into quite a bit of detail about the processing functions and settings, explaining what they mean and also why they exist in the first place (which is not always immediately clear). You do actually learn quote a bit about the theory behind RAW aswell as how to process it.

In short: good book. If you're looking to unlock the RAW potential of your camera and your creativity then this is an excellent resource.

I have been shooting digital since 2003. all these years shunning raw coz of its size & my ignorance of software to be used.
before my fingers go calcified, what the heck, go where the pros and eagles roam. i started to shoot raw.
storage is cheap compared to 2003.
this book has guided me tru the stages, not treating me like an idiot all the way.
to the extent, i UNinstalled two other softwares and now use only CS3 (with its Bridge and Camera raw).
mentally, i feel younger again.
the only drawback is PS CS3 is expensive in Malaysia. i hv sold my motobike to buy it. when PS CS6 comes out ..... who wants to buy my kidney?
to the old folks out there, CS3 and chicks hv lots in common.

"If you are a beginner, looking for a good introduction to the use of Adobe Camera RAW to manipulate your files to help you create better pictures, this book is as good as it gets."
-- Conrad J. Obregon, Amazon.com

"To a photographer or designer, Photoshop 3's Camera Raw feature is undeniably attractive. It's also a bit of a mystery: Raw vs. DNG file formats, how to manage files with Adobe Bridge, and of course how to improve your images in Camera Raw. Award-winning photographer and expert's expert Mikkel Aaland explains it all in Photoshop CS3 RAW, with fantastic examples and real-world tips. His book is the fastest way to master Raw."
-- Jay Nelson, Design Tools Monthly

"This should be required reading for anybody wanting to get the maximum quality out of their digital files."
-- Jonathan Ryan, TalkRocket

"The book's content is both straight to the point and well written. Ink is not wasted by the author with lame puns or jokes. One of the greatest things I appreciated about this book is how the author examines each topic thoroughly. For example, in several other Raw books, when it comes to the tool designed to remove Chromatic Aberration (CA), they describe the CA tool and its controls and quickly move on. I do not fault these authors. I am sure they just weren't that sure how to use it themselves. In this book, the problem of CA is discussed, the tool to correct it is explored, and then the author takes you through the steps needed to remove it. Too cool. If you shoot photos in Raw format, you have to have this book. Once you get it, make sure you sit down and read a section, download the sample files that are provided for the tutorials, and do them. You can learn a lot reading but you can retain the knowledge that you learned by applying it doing the tutorials."
-- Dave Huss, Amazon.com

"Mikkel Aaland's experience in the digital realm shows through in Photoshop CS3 RAW...If you want to learn how to shoot in Raw and need help to understand what you are doing, then Photoshop CS3 RAW is a great place to start. There are sample files that are available for download that will make sure that you get the same results that are found in the book. Photoshop CS3 RAW is highly recommended."
-- T. Michael Testi, Blogcritics Magazine

"This most excellent book is one of the first to be devoted exclusively to the topic of shooting in the raw, by explaining the advantages and challenges of using Adobe Camera Raw to produce magnificent images. In other words, this best-selling book is full of inside knowledge of how new features let photographers optimize and convert images for the best results in Adobe Photoshop CS3."
-- John Vacca, Amazon.com

"The outstanding thing to note about Mikkel Aaland's book Photoshop CS3 Raw: Get the Most Out of the Raw Format with Adobe Photoshop, Camera Raw, and Bridge is that is organized very systematically. Instead of being a breathless description of everything you can do with the software, Aaland focuses on why you would do something and how to do it. It's an effort that is fun to read and easy to reference."
-- Aspi Havewala, Blogcritics Magazine

"Photoshop CS3 RAW by Mikkel Aaland succeeds in instructing us how to use Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop CS3 as a very important workflow tool to process and enhance RAW images. This book is particularly suited for the beginning photographer who is just now starting to use his new DSLR camera to shoot RAW and has Photoshop CS3 installed in his computer. The lessons could go deep at times, but it can only benefit the photographer to understand the hows and whys of the tools used."
-- Chris Malinao, Studio Lighting

"Photoshop CS3 RAW has easy-to-follow instructions and beautiful illustrative graphics that help the reader gain a quick understanding of Photoshop CS3's three distinct working environments for RAW files..."
-- Stan Ashbrook, PSA Journal

"Neo-pros need this - and any computer or photography library strong in Photoshop techniques will find it popular."
-- James Cox, California Bookwatch: The Computer Shelf

"After repeatedly being given unsatisfactory, incomplete and sometimes just plain wrong answers by my fellow photographers and even personnel at the camera stores that I frequent, I really didn't know very much about camera RAW except that I should use it instead of shooting JPEGs. Finally this book not only tells people exactly why they should use it and when, but makes it clear that Adobe's newest release of CAMERA RAW 4.4.1 is such an improvement over the latest one that will work with CS2 that it makes the issue of finding out whether or not I can do some sort of workaround to let me use CS2 with my Nikon D3's (and soon D300's) RAW images irrelevant...If you have not read this book already, you really should do so - especially since it specifically discusses Adobe's PHOTOSHOP CS3, and how to derive maximum benefit from RAW image files while using it."
-- Jan Wagner, AutoMatters automotive columnist
