Full Description

Microsoft Word has grown considerably in power, sophistication and capability over the past decade, but one thing that hasn't changed since the early '90s is its user interface. The simple toolbar in version 2.0 has been packed with so many features since then that few users know where to find them all. Consequently, more and more people are looking for "insider" tips that will allow them to use these advanced and often hidden features. Microsoft has addressed this problem in Word 2007 by radically redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes every feature easy to locate and use. Unfortunately, Microsoft's documentation is as scant as ever, so even though you will be able to find advanced features, you might not know what to do with them.

Word 2007: The Missing Manual, written specifically for this version of the software, explains basics like how to create documents, enter and edit text, format, print, and fax. You will will also learn how to create sophisticated page layouts, insert forms and tables, use graphics, and create book-length documents with outlines and Master Documents. Coverage also includes how to share documents with other people and programs, create web pages, automate documents with fields, and automate tasks with macros and the Visual Basic scripting language. This book shows you how to do it all.

Word 2007 - The Manual's No Longer Missing!,  July 18 2007

This is right on the money! A very readable, very informative book written by someone who knows their subject – and has a dry sense of humour to boot. Well done Chris Grover! However you approach it, it’s equally good: you can use it as a reference manual, skim through to pick up the bits you want (helped by the top-of-the-page index tabs), or just read it cover to cover as I did. There must be countless people like me that use Word every day and are unaware of most of the fantastic things Word can do for you. Word 2007 is a huge step forward from previous editions and has some major differences in how you get things done. This is the perfect opportunity to find out.

The description above is about right. This book explains basics and teaches more advanced concepts. Collaboration and sharing are the main new and important issues with Office 2007, so Word 2007 is an important piece of that pie. I do not know if “This book shows you how to do it all.”, but it does show you quite a number of things that are necessary to know to get more out of Word.

My experience agreed with almost everything written. I have been a Word user for many years and find it to be everything I need in a word processing program. I thought the Introduction had a succinct review of the ribbon, Building Blocks, Live Preview, file format changes, and a few others that are really minor changes. Increased security in Word 2007 is welcome but let’s wait until the fat lady sings.

The topics start with ‘The Missing Credits, then moves to Introduction to Part One (Chapters 1 through 7), Part Two (Chapters 8 through 12), Part Three (Chapters 13 through 16), Part Four (Chapters 17 through 20), and Part Five, the Appendix. All parts are well organized, outlined, and logical.

This is not a complicated book, but has a lot of action in it. If you read it and do what it explains, then many easy actions remain easy instead of not quite so accurate memories of what you should do in certain circumstance. Expressive examples are seen throughout this book.

Chapter 18: Changing your security settings is one of the better chapters. Digital signatures, Trust Center, and Removing Personal Information are worth the cost of the book.

Chapter 19: Introducing macros and visual basic was my favorite chapter. The Developer tab, recording macros, running macros, and testing macros were very well written. Reading Visual Basic code and using Digital signatures were good too. Getting help was well done. I hope developers get a lot of use out of this chapter. Another one that is worth the cost of the book.

The 522+ pages were easy to read and understand, partly told as a story. I read it in 3 days. There were typos and grammar errors, starting on page 4 with ‘yougraduate’ (in the last paragraph on that page). This should not cause alarm in many books, but Word is one. If this is an editing or printing error, I apologize in advance, but if the author of a book on Word does not use the spelling and grammar checker, or does not believe the red squiggly underline and take action, then this starts to make me feel uneasy about his expertise. I’m not going to go over all the errors, someone else can do that but this is the only one of the four Missing Manual books I have reviewed where I have a concern about the expertise and thoroughness of the author and book.

I would recommend you get this book. It will pay for itself the first time the Internet goes down, you work offline using Word 2007, and you need help. This book can do that for you.

Microsoft Word 2007
The Missing Manual
Chris Grover
Pogue Press/O’Reilly

Word 2007, The Missing Manual is a continuation of Word 2007 For Starters, The Missing Manual. It is not intended for the occasional writer of documents using Microsoft’s Word. In this book, the author, Chris Grover has repeated many, but not all, of the features that are in the “For Starters” book, but this book offers additional information for the accomplished document/writer user.

This book has made clear that all the commands that had been buried in past versions of Word and needed several “clicks” to get to where you wanted to go, has been reorganized according to the task and function. He explains that the “drop down” menu has been replaced by “ribbons” that indicate immediately where you want to go to do whatever it is that you want to make and/or change. The greatest obstacle is unlearning all the strokes that you had to do prior to this version of Microsoft Word 2007. The learning curve of the “ribbons” takes time but once learned it becomes a necessity to the serious writer of any document. It is important to know that every one of the previous Office keyboard shortcuts works the same in Office 2007, - there is no relearning necessary for these actions.

One chapter of this book will show you how to make a plan for your document , so that at any time during the creation of the document you can expand or collapse levels and you can show or hide text, etc. Another chapter of the book deals with inserting section breaks, creating a table of contents, creating and building an index, navigating with hyperlinks, cross referencing the document, and creating footnotes, etc. There is a chapter that deals with creating tables, and moving around the tables, merging and splitting cells and shows how to use various table styles.

In addition Word 2007, The Missing Manual goes into some detail about how to add graphics, video and sound to your document, and shows how to work with shapes, charts, graphs, and adding captions and figure numbers to the graphics. Another chapter is devoted to adding comments by voice , deleting comments, highlighting text, and tracking changes while editing.

In Word 2007, The Missing Manual, the author describes in detail the mysteries of Mail Merge, using the recipient lists, running the mail merge wizard, merging to email. It will teach you how to sort your recipient list, as well as filter the list.

Another chapter deals with sharing documents and collaborating with other people. Under this section, the author includes information on creating web pages and blogs, and creating Forms with Word.

In Part 4 of The Missing Manual for Word 2007, you can find a chapter for customizing Word with macros and other tools. It shows you how to customize the Quick Access Toolbar, create keyboard shortcuts, and change Word’s display. You will find another chapter on changing the security settings, customizing Trust Center Settings and protecting yourself from malicious macros.

You will also learn how to create your own themes and templates. Throughout the book you will find easy explanations as well as diagrams to help you through the maze of new features.

In addition, he has included a section on customizing Word with macros and other tools.

Word 2007 has been redesigned and upon opening the program you are greeted with a new interface and "The Ribbon".

Word 2007 "The Missing Manual" has been written for those who are just beginning to use Word or for those who want to learn more than just typing letters. It is an ideal book to start learning more about the new interface and some of the more advanced features up to an intermediate level in a plain easy to understand language. The book contains many illustrations to assist you along the way. Covers what's new and how the changes affect the way you work, how to customize Word for your own convenience, create templates and jazz up otherwise boring documents.

A book I thoroughly recommend for those just starting out in Word or for those who simply want to build on their basic knowledge.

Although I've used Word for a number of years, there is alot of good information in this book to assist one with the transition to the new 2007 version. When I first looked at Word 2007, the look and feel was so very different from what I was use to seeing and I had difficulty finding ways to do some of the everyday things I do in Word. After reading this book and using Word 2007 again, I can find things with great ease. This book is well written and easy to understand.

Media reviews
"The book covers all features of the software including the many improvements, upgrades and enhancements. The new file formats are explained, as well as new features for collaboration, networking and security."
-- Edward Laskowski, Amazon Tech Reviewer

"The Missing Manual series is simply the most intelligent and usable series of guidebooks..."
-- Kevin Kelly, co-founder of Wired

"One of the beauties of the Missing Manuals is that there is always something new to discover and the research is quite thorough...I kept finding snippets of information, in the way of Tips or Notes, that would give just that bit extra."
-- Graham K. Rogers, Bangkok Post

"There are a lot of good books, but I keep returning to the Missing Manual series because they are inexpensive, easy to read and full of cool tricks and tips."
-- Bob Brooks, The South Bay Apple Mac User Group

"I like this screencast showing off Word 2007's new Ribbon from Chris Grover. This screencast goes along with his Word 2007: The Missing Manual book. I emailed him after finding the screencasts. He told me that this was his first screencast! I'm impressed! Click the screenshot below to start the screencast."
-- Betsy Weber, The Visual Lounge

"The intro to the book launches right into the basic differences in Word 2007 along with what's unique about "Missing Manuals." True to David Pogue's blurb on the back cover, this book isn't afraid to reveal "the good, the bad, and the ugly" about the subject matter (such as the relative usefulness of Word's help files)."
-- James Pyles, MCSE World

"...since the Office 2007 applications will not come with a handy user guide, which is the norm these days, and because of the major overhaul of the applications, users may find themselves reaching out to third-party guides to Office 2007. To the rescue comes these superb O'Reilly Missing Manual guides to Office 2007, that may be used even more than usual because of the drastic changes in Office 2007. These latest titles in this marvelous series of "Missing Manual" guides will surely get the attention of potential buyers who have taken the plunge into the new Office 2007 and find themselves a bit bewildered by its completely new look and organization."
-- Dale Farris, Reviews Coordinator, Golden Triangle PC Club

"Mixing a great combination of humor and good, common sense, they ease you into using these programs and placate the fear we all experience when faced with a new interface or operating system we don't understand. "
-- Mike Berman, Scripps Howard News Service, SacBee.com

"If you are working with longer and more complicated documents or want to know more that Word 2007 can do, you need this more complete book. Have you worked in Word and needed to do something that you have not done before? This book would be the one to use to learn how to do it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more than the basics."
-- Beata Kernan, eHard-Copy - Chicago Computer Society

"I have never seen a manual for any program, hardware or OS which is anywhere close to this series in its helpfulness to the reader. Anyone other than the well trained techs can find this book valuable."
-- Ray Bowler, Vice President, Des Moines Macintosh User's Group

"Four new "Missing Manual" books honed for 2007 are picks any program owner should have...These books should not only have been "in the box" with the software--they shouldn't be omitted from any library strong in computer references."
-- James A. Cox, The Computer Shelf

"...as I was desperate, I got out my copy of O'Reilly's Word 2007: The Missing Manual and found it had a very clear 5 page section only on Master Pages. Not only was it clearly written but my wife (after all those problems with Master Pages) took great delight in reading aloud to me various sections where the writer was saying things like "if you really must use Master Pages" and about a nifty feature (?) that when you remove a link to a file all that file's text is copied into the main document (surprise!!). All-in-all obviously a very worthwhile book. While Microsoft Press books are mainly (always?) very wary about pointing out product warts, obviously this Missing Manual at least isn't."
-- Mike Walsh, Mike Walsh's WSS

"What are your needs? Are you just looking for the basics in using this latest version of Word? Then Word 2007 For Starters is the book for you. If you are working with longer and more complicated documents or want to know more that Word 2007 can do, you need this more complete book. Have you worked in Word and needed to do something that you have not done before? This book would be the one to use to learn how to do it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more than the basics."
-- Beata Kernan, Chicago Computer Society

"Microsoft Word is a very user-friendly product, and is not that difficult of the software to learn and use. However, with this new 2007 version of the popular product, there are some changes and additions that are worth looking at and learning about. The "Missing Manual" series by O'Reilly's Rogue Press is definitely a winner. Chris Gover did a good job covering a lot of useful information in this book. Keep this book on your desk, if you need a good reference source on the subject. 5 stars!"
-- Giovanni Tairov, Amazon.com

"I have reviewed quite a number of Missing Manual books and I am always impressed with them. David Pogue is a Mac master and the depth of his knowledge shines through."
-- Roger Bernau, ACT Apple User Group Incorporated
