Windows Vista for Starters: The Missing Manual by David Pogue The unconfirmed error reports are from readers. They have not yet been approved or disproved by the author or editor and represent solely the opinion of the reader. Here's a key to the markup: [page-number]: serious technical mistake {page-number}: minor technical mistake : important language/formatting problem (page-number): language change or minor formatting problem ?page-number?: reader question or request for clarification This page was updated March 5, 2008. UNCONFIRMED errors and comments from readers: [4] 8th Par; Referring to the second printing, Feb 2007, the text refers to 3 appendices, whereas there is only one appendix, containing The Master Keyboard Shortcut List. {10} Several places; I suppose it is a matter for debate, but "email" is frequently hyphenated as "e-mail" to denote the fact that it is actually 2 words. [10] "It's a file cabinet."; "You can also trash icons you ... should be "no longer need ..." Word "no" is missing (11) 2nd paragraph; "... that require you to use the Mac's mouse." (this is a Windows Vista text -- probably should be "the PC's mouse") {11} "Figure 1-1:"; "... icons you'll encounter in Window." should probably make Window into Windows (plural) [12] Figure 1-2; The "Pop-up menu" being pointed to isn't actually called a "Pop-up menu," it is referred to as a "List box" (13) "When you click the right button..."; In "...like the ones shown..." you might want to make "ones" singular, since there is only one menu shown there. (14) "There's more than one way..."; You might want to mention that the file needs to be highlighted first before those actions can be performed. Also, are there really 165 ways? (15) seconds sentence from the bottom; parenthesis is after period. ... software programs). (16) First 2 sentences; Again with the parenthesis and periods? Maybe I was taught differently... (27) Anatomy of the start menu; "This list is" does not need to be in italics {27} Tip; "My" hasn't actually been around for 20 years, unless the author was exaggerating. (29) Figure 2-4; As you type, Vista "winnows"? (30) 3rd paragraph from bottom; Why is word "application" in bold? Seems out of place. [31] Entire page; Sleep is most certainly not a new feature in Vista. It has been around for ages. [31-32] Entire; "Sleep" does not create a file on the hard drive -- hibernation does. Sleep only keeps information in RAM. I think the feature he is referring to is only available on laptops. If/when a laptop loses both A/C power and battery power, the contents of RAM gets written to disk. This feature is not available on desktops. (At least I've never seen it). This is important because if a desktop loses power in sleep mode, all information in memory is lost. A desktop user must chose "hibernation" rather than "sleep" to avoid this. (33) Start-->Log off,...; To the right OF (not to the right OFF) (35) Start--> Default Programs,-->Control Panel; Not sure, but it seems like "Default Programs," shouldn't be there. Start --> Control Panel would make more sense. If indeed author intended for "Default Programs," to be there, There is an extraneous comma at the end of Programs. {36} Figure 2-7; I suppose it is a minor point, but there is no CD-ROM drive there. It is labeled as a DVD/CD-RW drive. {39} 1st paragraph under Note; Technically, "C:-->Users" would be written as "C:\Users" in the Windows world. {52} 2nd to last paragraph; unhitched its "alias" from... I suppose it is debatable, but "alias" is generally a Macintosh term. Author may wish to replace "alias" with "shortcut" (63) Tip plus bottom illustration; The mentions "... music by the Beatles and U2..." The illustration at the bottom shows filtering for Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, and John Mayer. The inconsistency distracts from the point being made. (66) Figure 3-15; Maybe it is just me, but it took awhile to understand that I had to press: Ctrl+Alt+Tab to get the menu to "stick" Author may wish to clarify this point somewhat to avoid confusion. (66) "Use the Taskbar"; Author refers readers to page 68, however, I think that is incorrect. Page 69, or Figure 3-17 would be more appropriate. (67) under Windows Flip 3D; With the "press of a keystroke"? That seems like odd usage. Perhaps simply: "With a keystroke," or "With the press of a key," (68) last sentence of caption on Figure 3-16; The caption mentions "... slo-mo trick described in Appendix B." There's no Appendix B in the table of contents, nor at the back of the book. There's no mention of Appendix B in the index. There's no mention of "slo-mo" in the index. {81} last sentence; the last sentence refers to " ... click Advanced to open ..." The screen shot shows something called "Advanced Search". The inconsistency will make folks spend time looking for "Advanced", which isn't there. I suggest that you use a different font or some delimiters to help readers/users differentiate between the text (e.g. "... you can click...") and the object to be manipulated (e.g. "Advanced"). By the way, the second bullet on the following page (82) uses the full phrase "Advanced Search", but says it is at "... the bottom of the results list (Figure 4-3)." Figure 4-3 doesn't appear to show this. (82) middle ("Date" bullet); The Figure 4-3 shows the "Date" field in the Advanced Search window. The text on page 82 mentions the "Date modified/created" field. The inconsistency confuses. (83) before the Tip; The Figure 4-3 depicts several more search fields/criteria than are bullet-listed on pages 82 and 83. For example, "Authors". (83) Tip; The Tip mentions typing something "right into Google's main search box" Figure 4-3 doesn't appear to contain a "Google main search box". Point#2 -- this is a Microsoft product -- what about Microsoft's search? (92) Figure 4-8 caption; "... the handy numeric 'badge' on your cursor..." ?What badge?! (not illustrated, not defined elsewhere) (99) 2nd paragraph under step 3; "... newfangled UDF format ..." Not defined nor referenced anywhere before this introduction. Not in Index. (101) first Tip; "... at the bottom of the window ..." ?what window? not illustrated, no reference to a figure illustrating this. (104) 2nd Paragraph; "Where do you want to redesign today?" Sorry, but that makes no sense. Did he mean to say "WHAT do you want to redesign today?" Or something else? (108) Public Pictures paragraph; Why is it "ironic" that the Sample Pictures are in the Public Pictures folder? (108) Sample Pictures paragraph; pix? Shouldn't that be pics? [110] Under Screen Savers heading; He should probably mention that he is referring to LCDs here. CRTs still need screen savers. (110) Second paragraph under Screen Savers; -and Windows Vista's built in screen saver is... Should read: "built in screen saverS ARE certainly entertaining", since he is referring to all of Vista's screen savers [111] Figure 5-5; This is simply not true. I don't have an Aero-capable PC and I can run every one of those screen savers. (130) last line; "... by double-clicking the Control menu spot just to the left of the File menu..." ?File menu?! Some of the windows (e.g., Figure 6-10) includes a File menu option, but didn't the book say this was gone? (148) 2nd paragraph in "Installing Downloaded Software" section; "Nthat that it's much work..." ?"Not that it's much work..." (162) first line of Figure 6-14 caption; "... the Balanced plan ..." The top illustration has no such section/selection. (164) last sentence; "...triangular Play button to the right..." The Figure 6-15 illustrates a "Test" button, not a "Play" button. (171) first sentence after 3 bullets; "... click the unlabeled Play button ..." Does that mean "look for the button that isn't labeled in the Figure 7-3?" (187) Figure 7-11; Nothing about this Figure seems relevant to the topic (Photos, Music, Movies). (188) Third paragraph; This section seems to be dealing with the topic "Make a Slideshow Movie". Unfortunately, the section seems incomplete (?where's the illustration?), and worse, the 3rd paragraph seems to be speaking to screen-saver/slideshow. Oh by the way, the 3rd paragraph mentions "... and wait 20 minutes ...", but the (?misplaced?) Figure 7-11 on the preceding page illustrates a 10 minute wait. If this book is intended for the novice user, an inconsistency like that will have him/her wondering if setting 10 minutes actually causes it to wait 20... (192) Figure 7-14; "Using this submenu..." The illustration doesn't show a submenu. (194) next to last line; "... in My Playlists ..." Didn't I read that the "My" was eliminated? The Figure 7-15 does not show "My Playlists", just "Playlists." (200) 2nd paragraph; "The dialog box shown in Figure 7-18..." There's no dialog box showing in Figure 7-18?! (204) end of 2nd paragraph; "... described in Appendix A." No Appendix A! (212) Figure 8-4 caption; The caption mentions "top" and "bottom" -- the illustration shows "side-by-side". Also, the last words in the "Bottom" section are "... Figure 8-1 shows that...". Figure 8-1 doesn't show that. (233) end of first sentence in Figure 9-3 caption; The instructions include a key-combination unlikely to be found on a PC -- did you intend to say -, rather than -? (245) end of first sentence; "...preview of the end ..." ?End of what? There's something missing here. (257) second Tip, first sentence; " ... by clicking Contacts in the toolbar." "Contacts" doesn't show in any Toolbar illustrated (not in 10-2 or 10-3). (269) First sentence in "Junk E-mail Options" section; "The other tabs are: ..." MISSING! There are no "other tabs" explained in the text. (290) "Note" at top - second line; "... as described below, ..." I found nothing "below" or anywhere else describing how to create faxes from thin air. (314) third paragraph, next to last line; "... editing the Registry (Appendix B)..." No appendices in this book. (314) "Remote Assistance" section, 2nd paragraph, first line; "...by sending a specific ..." Sentence ends in mid-air -- "a specific" what?! (316) #5-sentence; "...password into both boxes and then click Next." Is there supposed to be an illustration of this? (317) middle of page, sentence beginning "If your buddy..."; "... message shown at top in Figure 13-3 ..." I don't see that in the illustration, top or bottom, in Figure 13-3. (325) #6 (Figure 14-2, top); next sentence, (Figure 14-2, bottom); There is only one illustration, not two (top, bottom). And Figure 14-2 does NOT contain checkboxes, as stated. (325) Figure 14-2 caption; "Top: As noted earlier..." There is only one figure, and it does not illustrate file types. (354) Next to last sentence (in Figure 15-1 caption); "Clicking the 'Change an account' link at the top..." The illustration doesn't depict a 'Change an account' link. (364) First sentence in "Nostalgic Corner"; "If you first turn on the machine." Not a sentence. Doesn't seem to fit with remainder of topic. (373) "Customize" section; The 'Network and Sharing Center' depicted in Figure 16-2 does NOT contain a "Customize" task in the left-side task pane. And it DOES contain "Set up a connection or network", and "Manage network connections", and "Diagnose and repair" tasks, none of which are explained in the text. [387] top; The only appendix in my copy is the shortcut list. No appendix A, or any other lettered appendix."A" supposedly has information about the setup wizard. My printing is 1/2007 first edition. Is this appendix available for download? (390) last item in "Instant Search"...; "Open a selected program elevated" ?"elevated"? This term is not in the Index, and not explained elsewhere. What does this phrase mean?
