Our look is the result of reader comments, our own experimentation, and feedback from distribution channels. Distinctive covers complement our distinctive approach to technical topics, breathing personality and life into potentially dry subjects. Edie Freedman designed this cover. The cover image is a nineteenth century engraving from Scan This Book, a book of copyright-free engravings compiled by John Mendenhall. The cover layout was produced with Quark XPress 3.1 using the ITC Garamond font.
Edie Freedman and Jennifer Niederst designed the page layouts. Text was prepared using the SoftQuad sqtroff text formatter. Lenny Muellner modified and developed the troff macros necessary to implement the book design.
The body text of the book is set in the ITC Garamond typeface; the examples are set in Courier. Headings and captions are set in the Helvetica Condensed Bold Oblique typeface.
The figures were created in Aldus Freehand 4.0 by Chris Reilley and Karla Tolbert.
