Our look is the result of reader comments, our own experimentation, and feedback from distribution channels. Distinctive covers complement our distinctive approach to technical topics, breathing personality and life into potentially dry subjects. The animal on the cover of CJKV Information Processing is a blowfish, also know as a globefish, swellfish, puffer, and porcupine fish. It exists in tropical waters throughout the world. In Japan it is know as fugu, and is a treasured delicacy, usually eaten raw in thin slices. While parts of the blowfish are deliciously narcotic, other parts contain a deadly toxin. Because of this, only specially certified and licensed chefs are allowed to prepare the fish for people to eat. the skin of the blowfish is often used for making laterns and other decorations. Edie Freedman designed the cover of this book, using a nineteenth-century engraving from the Dover Pictorial Archive. The cover design was developed with QuarkXPress Version 3.32 using the ITC Garamond and HeiseiKakuGo-W5 fonts.

The inside layout was designed by Nancy Priest, and implemented in Adobe FrameMaker Version 5.5 by Mike Sierra. The illustrations were created in Macromedia FreeHand 8.0 by Chris Reilley. Additional production work was provided by Jane Ellin. Seth Maislin reveiwed the index. Text entry and page layout was done by the author on Apple Macintosh PowerBook 1400cs and PowerBook G3 Series computers running Adobe FrameMaker Version 5.5.

Illustrations and some text blocks began their life in Adobe Dimensions Version 3.0, Adobe Illustrator Version 8.0, Adobe Photoshop Version 5.0, Macromedia FreeHand Version 8.0J, QuarkXPress Version 4.0J, and SMI EDICOLOR Version 2.2. Custom typefaces were created using Adobe Systems' proprietary font production tools.

The English textface is 10-point ITC Garamond Light. Chapter and section titles are set in ITC Garamond Book Italic. Unless otherwise noted, Simplified and some Traditional Chinese text (GB standards) are set in Changzhou SinoType Technology's (STSong-Light) typeface design; most Traditional Chinese text (CNS standards and Big Five) and Vietnamese text (TCVN 5773:1993 and TCVN 6056:1995) are set in Arphic Technology's (MingTiEG-Medium) typeface design; Japanese text (JIS standards) is set in FDPC's W3 (HeiseiMin-W3) typeface design; and Korean text (KS standards) is set in Hanyang Systems' HYSMyeongJo-Medium) typeface design. Most of these typefaces are available in from Adobe Systems or their respective type foundries.

Whenever possible, our books use RepKover™, a durable and flexible lay-flat binding. If the page count exceedsRepKover's limit, perfect binding is used.
