Book description

Loaded with practical advice about almost every aspect of UNIX, this second edition of UNIX Power Tools addresses the technology that UNIX users face today. You'll find thorough coverage of POSIX utilities, including GNU versions, detailed bash and tcsh shell coverage, a strong emphasis on Perl, and a CD-ROM that contains the best freeware available.
Full Description

Ideal for UNIX users who hunger for technical -- yet accessible -- information, UNIX Power Tools, 2nd Edition, consists of tips, tricks, concepts, and freeware (CD-ROM included). It also covers add-on utilities and how to take advantage of clever features in the most popular UNIX utilities. Loaded with even more practical advice about almost every aspect of UNIX, this edition addresses the technology that UNIX users face today, differing from the first edition in a number of important ways. First, it slants the blend of options and commands more toward the POSIX utilities, including the GNU versions; the bash and tcsh shells have greater coverage, but we've kept the first edition's emphasis on the core concepts of sh and csh that will help you use all UNIX shells; and, Perl is more important than awk these days, so we've de-emphasized awk in this edition. This is a browser's book...like a magazine that you don't read from start to finish, but leaf through repeatedly until you realize that you've read it all. The book is structured so that it bursts at the seams with cross references. Interesting "sidebars" explore syntax or point out other directions for exploration, including relevant technical details that might not be immediately apparent. You'll find articles abstracted from other O'Reilly books, new information that highlights program "tricks" and "gotchas," tips posted to the Net over the years, and other accumulated wisdom. The 53 chapters in this book discuss topics like file management, text editors, shell programming -- even office automation. Overall, there's plenty of material here to satisfy even the most voracious appetites. The bottom line? UNIX Power Tools is loaded with practical advice about almost every aspect of UNIX. It will help you think creatively about UNIX, and will help you get to the point where you can analyze your own problems. Your own solutions won't be far behind. The CD-ROM includes all of the scripts and aliases from the book, plus perl, GNU emacs, netpbm (graphics manipulation utilities), ispell, screen, the sc spreadsheet, and about 60 other freeware programs. In addition to the source code, all the software is precompiled for Sun4, Digital UNIX, IBM AIX, HP/UX, Red Hat Linux, Solaris, and SCO UNIX.

An excellent book. When I first saw it I learned more about Unix than 18 months sys admin work. At the company I worked at it was the only manual that never went missing - someone was always looking for it!! It helped fix so many annoying little problems with short shell scripts that's it value is unbelievable. Highly recommended.

I've been a Unix (SYSV) user/progrmammer (shell, C, Perl) for 10 years now and a Linux user/programmer for 5 years.

I've owned this book for less than a year and am kicking myself for not buying it years ago. This book is a classic.

It's not for the absolute newbie, but if you have a few months experience...the book is invaluable.

This book is a must, if you have a problem. At first you think how the hell do you do it; look to the blue and white book and it is bound to be in there. If not it will have something close enough that you can still solve your problem. English cannot express how good this book is, hell it's so good I should have bought two. Little hacks and workarounds galore. Go buy, no second thoughts needed.

This book in my UNIX Bible.

Read it like a novel, use it like a

bottom-less tool-set: I'm still learning

tricks from UNIX Power Tools!

I work on an HP/UX workstation, and use Linux at home, and my only complaint is that it's big and doesn't fit well in my backpack with the rest of my stuff. This is a problem when the book is so good that I'm constantly carting it to and from work.

I now recommend this book to everyone using UNIX. It is a tomb of UNIX black magic, a great read and a great resource. I can't say enough about it.

Call it "The UNIX-Bible". The same thing.
The most important book for people believing in UNIX.

My biggest beef with Unix Power Tools 2 is the (very) faint
gray used for "links" to other topics. On most pages, it is so faint as to be barely readable. (In version one it was a very readable blue.)

I have heard this complaint from some of my colleagues at work. I really hope O'Reilly adresses this point in subsequent printings.

Media reviews

"Huge, expensive, and worth every cent. Your Linux geek will be thumbing this one for years." --Gene Wilburn, Computer Paper, December 2000

"As a Unix Professional, I have my own small library of O'Reilly books. If I need a book on any particular topic, I look to see if O'Reilly has one first. The quality and content of the books I have is excellent. It should have been no suprise to me that my recent purchase 'Unix Power Tools, Second Edition' would not be any less. I was unprepared however, at the goldmine I discovered. All of the little tips and tricks I've learned in my (relatively short) 5 years of Unix hacking were all in there. My only dismay was that my acquired knowledge was covered in about 1/5th of the book! My thanks to Mr. Peek, Mr. O'Reilly (go figure), and Mr. Loukides. This book will be an excellent reference for years to come. Good Work!" --Patrick J. Toal

"This unusual technical book contains over 1000 pages of practical information...it is useful and fun to read. It contains material that will interest all UNIX programmers, even the most experienced." --M.S. Joy, Computing Reviews, June 1998
