Edie Freedman designed this book's cover, and Hanna Dyer designed the CD label, using QuarkXPress running on a PowerMacintosh. The drill image was photographed by Ms. Freedman and retouched using Adobe Photoshop. The drill itself is a Miller's Falls "Dyno-Mite" Model A, circa 1950s. Edie Freedman also designed the page layout and the margin icons, which were created on a Macintosh computer and captured as encapsulated PostScript files. The icon graphics were bound to custom troff macros for formatting. Text was prepared using the SoftQuad sqtroff text formatter. Lenny Muellner modified and developed the troff macros necessary to implement the book design, including cross-referencing and indexing. The body of the book is set in ITC Garamond typeface. The examples are set in Courier, Courier Bold, and Courier Italic typefaces. Headings and captions are set in Helvetica Bold Condensed Oblique typeface. The illustrations that appear in the book were created in Macromedia Freehand 5.5 by Chris Reilley. Whenever possible, our books use RepKover?, a durable and flexible lay-flat binding. If the page count exceeds RepKover's limit, perfect binding is used.
