Full Description

Microsoft's MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) program is a rigorous testing and certification program for Windows NT system and network administrators. To achieve certification, one must pass four required exams and two elective exams. Close to twenty potential elective exams exist, although only nine of them are current electives covering the most recent version of a given product. Microsoft has also just introduced the MCSE+Internet certification, which requires passing seven required exams and two elective exams. There are four current elective exams to choose from to attain this certification. MCSE: The Core Exams in a Nutshell is a comprehensive study guide that covers the required exams offered in the MCSE certification. The companion book, MCSE: The Electives in a Nutshell, covers the most important and popular elective exams for the MCSE certification and also covers the other required and elective exams for the MCSE+Internet certification. The required exams covered in this book are:
  • Networking Essentials
  • Windows NT Workstation
  • Windows NT Server
  • Windows 95 (you must choose either the NT Workstation or Windows 95 exam)
Each chapter in the book covers one exam. It includes:
  • A summary of the key areas covered by the exam
  • A description of the format and difficulty of each exam and tips for passing it
  • Definitions of key terms
  • Sample test questions and answers
MCSE: The Core Exams in a Nutshell is a detailed quick reference designed for the administrator who already has some experience with Windows NT or is currently administering a different platform such as UNIX, and wants to learn what is necessary to pass the required exam portion of the MCSE certification. While no book is a substitute for real-world experience, this book will help you codify your knowledge and prepare for the exams. Any administrator who is serious about passing the required exams needed to acquire MCSE certification will find this book an invaluable tool.

MCSE: The Core Exams in a Nutshell Review,  April 21 2000

An excellent book. Using this and its companion, MCSE The Electives in a Nutshell, as my primary study resouces I managed to pass each exam first time and completed all six in three weeks.

I have tried other books/courses, but this was the best resource (and the cheapest). It will help you to pass, but in my opinion is more than a cramming aid.

Make sure you read the errata and do not get tripped up by minor errors.

I would recommend this to anyone.

Excellent Book! Its important to update your book to include errata data (nobody is perfect)

This book enabled me to complete my ENTIRE MCSE course in only 10 days. This book, Transcenderes, and Microsoft PEP tests were all I needed. Thank you!

PS One Qustion, On Page 290, question 7, Regarding which PROTOCOL supports netbios resolution the specified answer is WINS. IS not WINS a SERVICE, not a protocol?????? The only protocol I see listed as a answer is TCP/IP. But then that me :)

This book is excellent in preparation for the core exams, but not without some other study guide. Like it says, it's "in a nutshell" and it leaves much of the detail that the exams demand. I found it most useful with the Transcender exams (no MCSE-hopeful should go without them) and additional reading from SAMS' Teach Yourself series. So far I've taken 3 core exams and passed them all with flying colors, in part due to this book (my 4th core exam is scheduled this week). I plan on checking out the Electives in a Nutshell in the hopes of achieving the same success my elective exams.

Media reviews "For third-party source, O'Reilly's MCSE:The Core Exams in a Nutshell by Michael Moncour, provides extremely well organized, brief, but remarkably complete summaries of the key information required in the core tests. It provides great review and preview for the NT 4.0 Workstation exam, as wll as for all the other core exams. Get it!" --William F. Zachmann, President, Canopus Research, FYI August 6, 1999

"This book covers the Networking essentials (70-058), NT Workstation "Limiting itself to the basics of what you will be asked, the wording is lucid and, paradoxically, far more understandable than other volumes that try to teach you everything they know about (say) network essentials. "On the Exam" boxes point out how Microsoft sees the world, and the occasional "In the Real World" points out where knowing too much can get you into trouble...Not only does this save you shelf space, but it is, in all likelihood, the most effective study guide as well." --Robert M. Slade, MKMCSENS.RVW, 1998
