Full Description

Microsoft's MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) program is a rigorous testing and certification program for Windows NT system and network administrators. To achieve certification, one must pass four required exams and two elective exams. Close to twenty potential elective exams exist, although only nine of them are current electives covering the most recent version of a given product. Microsoft has also just introduced the MCSE+Internet certification, which requires passing seven required exams and two elective exams. There are four current elective exams to choose from to attain this certification. MCSE: The Electives in a Nutshell is a comprehensive study guide that covers the most popular and important elective exams for the MCSE, as well as the Internet requirements and electives for the MCSE+Internet. This book is the companion volume to the bestselling MCSE: The Core Exams in a Nutshell. This book covers the following exams:
  • Internetworking with TCP/IP
  • Internet Information Server 4.0
  • Internet Explorer 4.0 Administration
  • Proxy Server 2.0
Each chapter covers one exam. It includes:
  • A summary of the key areas covered by the exam
  • A description of the format, difficulty of each exam and tips for passing it
  • Definitions of key terms
  • Sample test questions and answers
MCSE: The Electives in a Nutshell is a detailed quick reference designed for the administrator who already has some experience with Windows NT or is currently administering a different platform such as UNIX, and wants to learn what is necessary to pass the elective exam portion of the MCSE and the MCSE+Internet elective and required exams. While no book is a substitute for real-world experience, this book will help you codify your knowledge and prepare for the exams. Any administrator who is serious about passing the required exams needed to acquire MCSE and MCSE+Internet certification will find this book an invaluable tool.

MCSE: The Electives in a Nutshell Review,  May 27 1999

I really liked the Core book, so I bought this one. I use these books to get an overview of the application. Then I go to class or read a more detailed self-study book. Before taking the test, I read through the Nutshell book 1 more time. The information is VERY condensed, so you have to read every word. I think that it does a good job of making sure that you didn't miss any important subjects. I have used it for the TCP/IP and Exchange 5.5 tests. I will continue to buy these nutshell books in the future.

Where is the other half of this book?? In the companion book - MCSE: The Core Exams in a Nutshell - it states that ALL of the electives are covered in this book. I was very dismayed to find that SQL Server was not covered. Are we seriously expected to accept that the Proxy Server exam is more popular than the SQL Server exams? I think not.

I will keep the book anyway to get an overview of all of the Internet exams. The format and content seem fine, but I don't like being promised more than I got! Is an "Electives Part 2" in the pipeline? The Sequel (if you know what I mean)??

This is a good book for review purposes, but must be read carefully. Since the information is so condensed, it is very easy to pass over errors in information. For example, an as yet unmentioned error in the book is as follows: On page 31 (TCP/IP) the discussion is on subnet masking. In point number 4 it reads that a NETWORK address of all ones or zeroes is not allowed, which is true, but what is really being referenced in this example is a Class C address with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.224 which creates blocks of 32 possible addresses per subnet - 2. This means that a HOST address of X.X.X.32 is not allowed because a HOST address cannot be all ones or zeroes. This took me some time to figure out. If the host address is 32 with a subnet mask of 224, that means that all 5 bits of the host address are zero, which is illegal.

An excellent book. Using this and its companion, MCSE The Core Exams in a Nutshell, as my primary study resouces I managed to pass each exam first time and completed all six in three weeks.

I have tried other books/courses, but this was the best resource (and the cheapest). It will help you to pass, but in my opinion is more than a cramming aid.

Make sure you read the errata and do not get tripped up by minor errors.

I would recommend this to anyone.
