Book description

The vi Editor Pocket Reference is a companion volume to O'Reilly's updated sixth edition of Learning the vi Editor, presenting movement and editing commands, the command-line options, and other elements of the vi editor in an easy-to-use tabular format.
Full Description

For many users, working in the UNIX environment means using vi, a full-screen text editor available on most UNIX systems. Even those who know vi often make use of only a small number of its features. The vi Editor Pocket Reference is a companion volume to O'Reilly's updated sixth edition of Learning the vi Editor, a complete guide to text editing with vi. New topics in Learning the vi Editor include multi-screen editing and coverage of four vi clones: vim, elvis, nvi, and vile. This small book is a handy reference guide to the information in the larger volume, presenting movement and editing commands, the command-line options, and other elements of the vi editor in an easy-to-use tabular format.

This is a great reference. Now that the vi/vim book is updated I would ask that O'Reilly udate the pocket reference as well.

I'm normally an Emacs type of guy (my flavor is Xemacs), but some days I need the lightness of vi to perform quick tasks. O'Reilly's vi Editor Pocket Reference is a great book to have by my desk, with access to all of the vital functions in vi listed.

This little guide even covers a few vi clones, including Vim and vile. Just wish it covered Vigor for a few laughs. :)

Absolutely superb summary of vi commands and operation, including many (but not all) additional commands in vim. Only 66 pages, but I still refer to it after months of using vi with increasing confidence. Get it and enjoy becoming an efficient master of this wonderful tool! By the way, the sed & awk Pocket Reference has also been very useful for regular expressions and text substitutions in vi.

I am attending SFSU and doing my best to retain all I can about UNIX and vi editor. Needless to say, overwhelming, is an understatement! Fortunately, this little book is a life saver!! Hand-outs that are given usually get "filed" in the book bag or reused at note paper. With this book I instantly became the most popular guy in the class!! I know one day I'll use all these hints, maybe, but for now this pint-sized book has has given me extra confidence in vi editing.

Media reviews
"[Consumers] will find the fine 'pocket references' produced by O'Reilly to be compact and affordable."
-- James Cox, The Computer Shelf: Midwest Book Review

"This book is really handy for quick reminders during the initial learning curve and is small enough to actually fit in your pocket. Yeah, it peeks out just a bit, but definitely not something difficult to bring around in your back pocket or bookbag."
-- Christer Edwards, Ubuntu Tutorials
