Ray has written an excellent desktop reference for Delphi. I really liked the explanation of the SysUtils unit. I found that there were functions in there that I had written myself, if I had only known I would have saved myself some time. The Language reference with the Tips and Tricks is excellent, helps make more sense of the sometimes archaic online help. My only complaint is that this is the ONLY Delphi book published by O’Reilly, I would love to see a Learning, Programming, or Mastering book!

I have buy this book last week. When i first begin read, i think it not very good and some part is so simply. But the Chapter 5 is very good.
BTW, i buy this book in china, it is chinese version and only cost 60 RMB, about $8.

Quite simply, this is a superb book. The layout is simple and intuative, there is a wealth of usefull information and it is well written.
I would not have any reservations about recommending this book to anyone who uses Delphi.

This is the best book about Delphi in my hand, a nice reference book.
And I hope that O'Reilly will publish more books about Delphi.

Fantastic book. I was lucky to find it. My local bookstore as of today has NO Delphi books (I suspect it's because Delphi's so popular, they can't keep 'em on the shelf). I was lucky to find this one and only copy a few months ago.
My only complaint: the cover came off in about 3 weeks time. Elmers Glue fixed it right up.

the book is an absolute "must have"-book for serious delphi-programmers. I've a lot "nice to have" delphi books but this is very usefull; BUT: the book with paperback is not the best idea; I wish that the "nutshell-2 (included kylix?)" is with a better paperback for the daily working. :-) thomas

"Delphi in a Nutshell" isn't just another ordinary Delphi book. Once again Ray has manage to take on topics that are unique and not covered in any detail if at all by other authors. The chapters on
RTTI and the Delphi object model alone are well worth the price. This goes onto my short list of "must have" Delphi books for any serious program (Ray actually now has 3 of the 5). Good work Ray.

I have used this book on numerous occasions already to robustify my code.
I own approximately 20 Delphi books, and consider "Delphi in a Nutshell" to be one of the few "classics".
If you're only going to buy a couple of Delphi books, this should be one of them.

I am using this book a lot. I like the reference style info together with examples. It contains much of what I've always wanted to really understand (memory management, RTTI, interfaces). Great job.

This book does an excellent job of describing the core Delphi Object Pascal Language.
I have several other Delphi books that try to cover everything in Delphi. Usually they end up spreading the details of the base language throughout the book. With "Delphi in a Nutshell", I have all the details presented in a clear, easy to reference manner.
Now I don't have to open up sysutils.pas in the editor to find the prototype for StrPos (or was that StrScan? ;>

Delphi in a Nutshell is exactly the book I have been looking for. Unlike most other Delphi books, it provides definative information on the language. It does not waste time covering basic Pascal syntax, nor does it redundantly cover visual program creation. The tutorial chapters are on the right stuff, object models, RTTI, and concurrent programming. The reference is excellent.
So when are you coming out with a book that treats the VCL in exactly the same way?

The book, Delphi in a Nutshell, is superb. It covers the functions and commands in Delphi like they should be covered. They are listed alphabetically with explanations and examples of each. Each of them is explained much better than in any of the other books on Delphi. In each case, more insight into the actual use of the function or command is given than is available elsewhere. This book fills a long standing void in the literature on Delphi. I recommend it to all Delphi programmers and to those who program in other languages for graphical use interface operating systems.

I might be biased, having done a technical review of the book. However, even though I consider myself a veteran Object Pascal and Delphi programmer, reading this book was really a learning experience. IMO, this book belong on the shelf of every Delphi programmer, beginner or long-time proffesional.
