Full Description

With a new name and a new focus on CORBA, database drivers, and Microsoft Back Office applications, Inprise/Borland Delphi is enjoying a resurgence, with a growing user base of programmers who use Delphi for rapid development of enterprise computing applications. Not to rest on success, the latest version of Delphi, Version 5, includes further expansion and refinement of the 3-tier application framework introduced in Delphi 4 and has resulted in a prize-winning product. Delphi in a Nutshell is the first concise reference to Borland/Inprise Delphi available. It succinctly collects all the information you need in one easy-to-use, complete, and accurate volume that goes beyond the product documentation itself. Delphi in a Nutshell starts with the Delphi object model and how to use RTTI (Run Time Type Information) for efficient programming. The rest of the book is the most complete Delphi Pascal language reference available in print, detailing every language element with complete syntax, examples, and methods for use. The book concludes with a look at the compiler, discussing compiler directives in depth.

Ray has written an excellent desktop reference for Delphi. I really liked the explanation of the SysUtils unit. I found that there were functions in there that I had written myself, if I had only known I would have saved myself some time. The Language reference with the Tips and Tricks is excellent, helps make more sense of the sometimes archaic online help. My only complaint is that this is the ONLY Delphi book published by O’Reilly, I would love to see a Learning, Programming, or Mastering book!

Quite simply, this is a superb book. The layout is simple and intuative, there is a wealth of usefull information and it is well written.

I would not have any reservations about recommending this book to anyone who uses Delphi.

This is the best book about Delphi in my hand, a nice reference book.

And I hope that O'Reilly will publish more books about Delphi.

Fantastic book. I was lucky to find it. My local bookstore as of today has NO Delphi books (I suspect it's because Delphi's so popular, they can't keep 'em on the shelf). I was lucky to find this one and only copy a few months ago.

My only complaint: the cover came off in about 3 weeks time. Elmers Glue fixed it right up.

the book is an absolute "must have"-book for serious delphi-programmers. I've a lot "nice to have" delphi books but this is very usefull; BUT: the book with paperback is not the best idea; I wish that the "nutshell-2 (included kylix?)" is with a better paperback for the daily working. :-) thomas

"Delphi in a Nutshell" isn't just another ordinary Delphi book. Once again Ray has manage to take on topics that are unique and not covered in any detail if at all by other authors. The chapters on
RTTI and the Delphi object model alone are well worth the price. This goes onto my short list of "must have" Delphi books for any serious program (Ray actually now has 3 of the 5). Good work Ray.

I have used this book on numerous occasions already to robustify my code.

I own approximately 20 Delphi books, and consider "Delphi in a Nutshell" to be one of the few "classics".

If you're only going to buy a couple of Delphi books, this should be one of them.

I am using this book a lot. I like the reference style info together with examples. It contains much of what I've always wanted to really understand (memory management, RTTI, interfaces). Great job.

This book does an excellent job of describing the core Delphi Object Pascal Language.

I have several other Delphi books that try to cover everything in Delphi. Usually they end up spreading the details of the base language throughout the book. With "Delphi in a Nutshell", I have all the details presented in a clear, easy to reference manner.

Now I don't have to open up sysutils.pas in the editor to find the prototype for StrPos (or was that StrScan? ;>

Delphi in a Nutshell is exactly the book I have been looking for. Unlike most other Delphi books, it provides definative information on the language. It does not waste time covering basic Pascal syntax, nor does it redundantly cover visual program creation. The tutorial chapters are on the right stuff, object models, RTTI, and concurrent programming. The reference is excellent.
So when are you coming out with a book that treats the VCL in exactly the same way?

The book, Delphi in a Nutshell, is superb. It covers the functions and commands in Delphi like they should be covered. They are listed alphabetically with explanations and examples of each. Each of them is explained much better than in any of the other books on Delphi. In each case, more insight into the actual use of the function or command is given than is available elsewhere. This book fills a long standing void in the literature on Delphi. I recommend it to all Delphi programmers and to those who program in other languages for graphical use interface operating systems.

I might be biased, having done a technical review of the book. However, even though I consider myself a veteran Object Pascal and Delphi programmer, reading this book was really a learning experience. IMO, this book belong on the shelf of every Delphi programmer, beginner or long-time proffesional.

Media reviews

"...an excellent desktop reference for Delphi."
--Kenneth Wilcox, Boise Software Developers Group, Dec 2002

"There can be few Delphi programmers who don’t
feel like tearing their hair out at least once a day
when they just can’t find the information they are
looking for. When you have exhausted the printed
documentation and online help, where do you turn to
next? If you have a copy of Ray Lischner’s
"Delphi in a Nutshell", the answer is obvious.
While this is not the only book you’ll ever need on
Delphi, it is likely to be one of the most useful
you’ll ever buy."
--PC Plus, Nov 2001

"The book is truly a programmer's reference. It helps flesh out much of the documentation provided with the Delphi program disks. It provides an exhaustive dictionary of the Delphi language, appropriate cross-references to related syntax, and terse but usable examples. " --Dallas/Ft. Worth UNIX Users Group, July 2001

Delphi Informant Magazine Readers Choice 2001 award for Best Book

"an in-depth exploration of the very heart of Delhi I predict this book will become an essential reference for every Delphi developer who adds it to his or her library." --Alan C. Moore, Delphi Informant Magazine, Nov. 2000

"Another masterful tome by Lischner. It includes so much in-depth, undocumented information that it earns a place of honor next to the all-time great Delphi books every advanced programmer should own." --Ron Loewy, Delphi Informant Magazine, August 2000

"Delphi in a Nutshell isn't the kind of book you read in the bath, but it is one every Delphi programmer should have available when out of it. --Steve Patient, amazon.co.uk, May 2000

"I've been looking for a good, solid Delphi reference book for quite awhile now & by jove, I've finally found it. All the other Delphi related books I have come across are all lacking in certain areas but Delphi in a Nutshell takes off from where all the other authors failed to complete & allows the Delphi programmer, whether they be a beginner or advanced coder, to the next level in understanding what is under the hood of the Delphi language, it is invaluable and an absolute bargain for the price. Forget all the rest, get
Delphi in a Nutshell. No Delphi developer should leave home without it. 9/10." --xploiter.com, May 2000

"Whether you are a novice or a more experienced developer, this tutorial and reference is all you need to be productive with the latest and greatest in object-oriented programming with Delphi. --Richard Dragan, amazon.com, April 2000

"Ray Lischner's Delphi in a Nutshell is a clear and concise reference to Delphi that should be a part of every Delphi developer's bookshelf. With the excitement and interest surrounding the forthcoming Kylix project, this book also becomes primer for Delphi on Linux. Developers interested in RAD Linux development would be doing themselves a favor by learning Delphi for Windows today with Lischner's new book. Delphi in a Nutshell is also significant because it brings O'Reilly's reputation as the leading publisher of books for Linux into the world of Delphi development and vice versa. Developers interested in either Windows or future Linux Delphi application development should keep this book close at hand." --Ben Riga, Director of Product Management, Inprise/Borland.

"Even though I consider myself a veteran Object Pascal and Delphi programmer, reading this book was really a learning experience. IMO, this book belongs on the shelf of every Delphi programmer, beginner or long-time professional." --Hallvard Vassbotn, Tech reviewer, April 2000

"Think of Delphi in a Nutshell as a must-have manual on the Delphi programming that blends a complete overview on the subject with the kind of nuts and bolts information that every programmer, regardless of skill level, needs every single day!" --Zarko Gajiz, Delphi Programming, about.com, April 2000
