Book description
A companion to Feuerstein's other bestselling Oracle PL/SQL books, this workbook presents a carefully constructed set of problems and solutions that will test your language skills and help you become a better developer. Three levels of exercises--beginner, intermediate, and expert--cover the full set of language features. These include variables, loops, exception handling, data structures, object technology, cursors, built-in functions and packages, PL/SQL tuning, and the new Oracle8i features (including Java and the Web).
Full Description
However excellent they are, most computer books are inherently passive--readers simply take in text without having any opportunity to react to it.
The Oracle PL/SQL Developer's Workbook is a different kind of animal! It's designed to engage you actively, to get you solving programming problems immediately, and to help you apply what you've learned about PL/SQL--and in the process deepen your knowledge of the language. By tackling the exercises in this workbook, you'll find yourself moving more rapidly along the learning curve to join the growing ranks of PL/SQL experts.
The Oracle PL/SQL Developer's Workbook is a companion to Steven Feuerstein's bestselling
Oracle PL/SQL Programming and his other PL/SQL books from O'Reilly. It contains a carefully constructed set of problems and solutions that will test your language skills and help you become a better developer--both with PL/SQL and with other languages. Exercises are provided at three levels: beginner, intermediate, and expert. The workbook exercises cover all the major features of PL/SQL, including those new to Oracle8i (e.g., Java and web features, autonomous transactions, and bulk binds).
You'll find chapters on:
- Basic language elements--variables, naming, loops, conditional and sequential control, exception handling, and records.
- Data structures--index-by tables, nested tables, variables arrays (VARRAYs), and object technology.
- Database interaction--cursors, DML and transaction management, cursor variables, and native dynamic SQL
- Program construction--procedures, functions, blocks, packages, database triggers, and calling PL/SQL functions in SQL.
- Built-in functionality--the character, date, conversion, numeric, and miscellaneous functions, and the DBMS_SQL, DBMS_PIPE, DBMS_OUTPUT, UTL_FILE, and DBMS_JOB built-in packages.
- Miscellaneous topics--using Java with PL/SQL, external programs, PL/SQL web development, tuning PL/SQL, and PL/SQL for DBAs.

A real good book for fine tunning one's understanding of pl/sql. Going through the questions in this book before I gave my first 2 exams of 'OCP Application Developer Track' made me confident enough to face the exams with ease.

If there is any book which will "fine-tune" one's knowledge of PL/SQL, this is it. It is written in Feuerstein's inimitable style which will keep you engaged with the book much longer than any other peer book of it's kind. There is so much to learn from this book really - and it applies to beginners as experts alike. This book explores the tiniest nuts and bolts of PL/SQL in an exercise-like format which gives the reader a chance to ponder on the problem before he/she looks up the answers. And I must add, you are in store for a lot of surprises when you look up the answers in the second half of the book ! (escpecially in the experts' section). A must-buy.

At first, I didn't like the format of the book. It has a section for questions and another for the answers. I didn't want to have to keep two bookmarks just to read the book.
However, after spending a few days with it, I began noticing that I was learning a lot without trying to digest a lot of boring information. The questions made me think about what really happens and the answers give a great deal of information without a great deal of text.
Very thought provoking. It's like a journey of discovery rather than a classroom lecture.

"I recommend this book to anyone who wants to further his or her skills in writing good Oracle PL/SQL code. However excellent they are, most computer books are inherently passive--we must simply take in text without having any opportunity to react to it. The Oracle PL/SQL Developer's Workbook is very different! It's designed to involve us actively, to get us solving programming problems immediately, and to help us apply what we've learned about PL/SQL--and in the process deepen our knowledge of the language. By completing the exercises in this workbook, we will find ourselves moving more rapidly along the learning curve to join the growing ranks of PL/SQL experts." --John J. Dyer, May 2001
"This book is an excellent learning aid and even dipping in for a question here and there is likely to lead to an enhanced understanding of PL/SQL programming." --Mark Whitehorn, Developers Review, Dec 2000
"Steven Feuerstein is the most knowledgeable PL/SQL developer I have encountered in my years of training and working with Oracle clients. He has produced a book that truly tests the PL/SQL knowledge of beginners to experts.. . This is another fantastic effort by Steven which will certainly find its way to the bookshelves of serious PL/SQL developers everywhere." --Jeff Gilles, Vice-President, R&D, Online Group, ARIS Corporation
