I tried using this book without the CD which I had left at home. After hours of trying to compile the code on page 185 for the XMLDocuments class on Oracle9i client and Java SDK 1.4, I have decide that the product is just a waste of my money and unfortunately my time.

Frankly, if the code in the book does not compile and I have to spend hours debugging it, the book's value as a reference source is very much diminshed.

Authoritative and detailed. It demystifies CLOBs and how to handle them. It demonstrates and provides routines to empower PL/SQL and Java programmers to use XML and XSLT processing in their own database code. The book reviews and explains numerous Oracle offerings such as Intermedia Text.

This is the book about XML and Java that teaches me the most.

(I couldn’t help mumbling ‘Cool’ from time to time …)

The examples are great, specially the Stock Quotes example.

Also the information on Java Stored Procedures turned out to be really useful.

Re-finding information that you know you read in the book somewhere can be difficult sometimes.

This is perhaps the best book on XML written so far. The material in the book provides deep insight into the Oracle XML capacities by providing real world examples and issues faced with reading/writing XML datagrams from databases through Oracle XML capacities and covers a wide gamut of issues (mostly performance) faced by application developers in using XML as the format for data exchange and solutions to counter most of these issues. The best part of the book are the chapters on XSLT and the numerous examples that shows the power of XSLT in rendering and transforming XML data. The book is highly recommended for both beginners and experienced programmers in XML(/Java). There is something for

every level of reader interested in using XML for B2B applications.

This is an essential book for anyone working with

Oracle and XML. There's no other book which comes

close in these topics.

The examples are clear and well-explained. Within

the book Steve Muench develops a package of XML utilities

which accompany the examples. These utilities are

extremely useful in their own right, and are

sure to become a standard part of your toolkit.

Both Java and PL/SQL developers will find the book useful

as Muench covers the examples from both angles. The

coverage of the Oracle XSQL technology is unique.

I highly recommend this book and have pointed

more than a few developers towards it already.

After reading just the opening chapters you'll

be itching to get started using the Oracle

XML tools on offer.

A must have for any Oracle/XML developers bookshelf.

Nothing could be more true than what bill has said about this book. In my opinion, this is perhapes the best book that I have ever read ! Actually, I have been waiting for this book to come out for quite some time, especially after I had read the sample chapter, I used to visit OReilly site daily to see the release. While reading the book, I felt as if the author had the premonition

about what curiosity/question a reader might have and he goes on to explain that, I mean this is amazing. Another book that I would like to see from Steve would be "Business Components for Java". Steve, if you are redaing this, please give it a serious thought

Steve Muench should get an Oscar nomination for this. What comes through loud and clear is what a total understanding he has of the subject. This, along with his talent of making a very complex subject almost easy to understand, puts him among the very best writers of technical subjects.

Further, I have compiled and ran several of his procedures and guess what? They work!

I recommend this book to all developers who struggle daily with the Oracle implementations and need to develop a XML app or two. Don’t even install JDeveloper and the parsers until you have read the first few chapters.
