Our look is the result of reader comments, our own experimentation, and feedback from distribution channels. Distinctive covers complement our distinctive approach to technical topics, breathing personality and life into potentially dry subjects. The animal on the cover of Excel 2000 in a Nutshell is a Northern Gannet (Sula bassanus). The Northern Gannet is the largest seabird breeding in North American waters. It feeds primarily on surface-dwelling fish such as herring and makerel, which are taken from diving from heights up to 43 meters and plummeting into the water with great speed and force. The bird enters the water head first and swallows its prey whole. The bird's skull is incredibly strong, and a system of air sacs also helps to absorb the shock of these plunges. Northern Gannets take their winters at sea, from southern Virginia to Florida, and return north the remainder of the year.

The Northern Gannet's nests are found on steep cliffs on Canada's and the United States' east coast. The nests are made of vegetation, seaweed, feathers, and earth, and may be cemented together with guano. The Northern Gannet produces a single egg, which incubates for 44 days. After 90 days, the chick is ready to leave the nest and search for its own food. Maureen Dempsey was the production editor, and Clairemarie Fisher O'Leary was the copyeditor, for Excel 2000 in a Nutshell. Sarah Jane Shangraw provided quality control. Brenda Miller wrote the index.

Hanna Dyer designed the cover of this book, based on a series design by Edie Freedman. The cover image is an original illustration created by Lorrie LeJeune. Emma Colby produced the cover layout with QuarkXPress 4.1 using Adobe's ITC Garamond font.
