Full Description

The GIMP Pocket Reference explains the numerous features of the GNU Image Manipulation Program--more affectionately known as "The GIMP"--and is the essential guide for designers working in a Linux/Unix environment. The GIMP is an open source image editor and design application that parallels Adobe Photoshop in functionality with one exception: it is free. The GIMP runs on virtually all Unix platforms, is included with most commercial Linux distributions, and can be downloaded freely from the Internet. This powerful image manipulation tool can be quite complex, making it hard to overlook the whole functionality. Based on the menu structure of the program, this handy reference covers GIMP version 1.2. It explains the function of every menu item and offers tips for every day usage. The Appendix explains important terms of image manipulation and contains a table of file formats supported by The GIMP. The GIMP Pocket Reference enables novices and experts alike to use this complex program fast and efficiently.

A very good book.

If you know your way around Gimp somewhat,

I think you'll find

this book serves you well as a compact reference to Gimp.

It's certainly done the job for me.

The main weakness of the book as a reference, that I've encountered,

is its sparse Table of Contents

and non-existent (literally) index.

But there are effective ways around these lacks.

If you are in the process of learning GIMP

and you are willing to do some experimenting,

this book could be most helpful.

I used it successfully in this way.

Gimp itself is an excellent tool.

It really is worth a bit of effort to learn

to use Gimp effectively.

I have a number of O'Reilly books in my library... well, OK, scattered hither and yon all over my house, my car, and most recently... in my vest pocket. No, that wasn't a typo, I recently started carrying one or another of the O'Reilly Pocket Reference books with me in the inside pocket of a cargo vest.

This one was recently translated from the German Gimp kurz & gut, (GIMP short & good) published in March of 1999. Despite the deviation from the original title, this book makes for a very good short reference book indeed.

The GIMP, Gnu Image Manipulation Program, is an extremely useful and versatile binary, and the versatility is what makes the book, if not necessary, then at least desirable. It address the 1.2 version of the GIMP, outlining the various menus, functions, and scripts available to the user. I knew something of how to use the GIMP previously, however after a few weeks of perusing this little gem of knowledge in my spare time and while actually doing some photo manipulation, my horizon has expanded considerably.

Though not a complete course in the use of the GIMP, if necessary, one could learn to use it from reading the book and keeping it handy beside the keyboard. Buy this one. At $9.99, it is a bargain, especially for an O'Reilly book, and you will never regret your purchase.

"[Consumers] will find the fine 'pocket references' produced by O'Reilly to be compact and affordable."
-- James Cox, The Computer Shelf: Midwest Book Review

"O'Reilly's GIMP Pocket Reference is one of the best books around. The 96-page, paperback GIMP Pocket Reference is an excellent guide to getting the most out of the GIMP's complexities. If you use the GIMP in a production environment, buy this book now--it's a nearly indispensable tool in this capacity. The well-designed structure of this guide provides easy access to information typically buried in the depths of more comprehensive books on the GIMP. --the GIMP Pocket Reference offers unmatched convenience, and it fits easily in your pocket, too." --Todd Volz, CNET Linux Center, 3/23/2001

"The GIMP Pocket Reference gives the user the key to the toolbox and is a superior resource either as an independent reference or as a complement to another text." --Elizabeth Zinkann, Sys Admin Magazine, January 2001

"O'Reilly has unveiled the GIMP Pocket Reference, which helps developers understand and use the different features of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP)." --Sunworld, Oct 2000
