Full Description

DNS and BIND discusses one of the Internet's fundamental building blocks: the distributed host information database that's responsible for translating names into addresses, routing mail to its proper destination, and many other services. As the authors write in the preface, if you're using the Internet, you're already using DNS -- even if you don't know it. The third edition covers BIND 4.9, on which most commercial products are currently based, and BIND 8, which implements many important new features and will be the basis for the next generation of commercial name servers. It also covers topics like DNS security (greatly improved with BIND 8.1), asynchronous notification of changes to a zone, dynamic updates, and programming with Perl's Net::DNS module. Whether you're an administrator involved with DNS on daily basis, or a user who wants to be more informed about the Internet and how it works, you'll find that this book is essential reading. Topics include:
  • What DNS does, how it works, and when you need to use it
  • How to find your own place in the Internet's name space
  • Setting up name servers
  • Using MX records to route mail
  • Configuring hosts to use DNS name servers
  • Subdividing domains (parenting)
  • Securing your name server: restricting who can query your server, preventing unauthorized zone transfers, avoiding bogus name servers, etc.
  • Mapping one name to several servers for load sharing
  • Troubleshooting: using nslookup, reading debugging output, common problems
  • DNS programming, using the resolver library and Perl's Net::DNS module

I have this book starting from the first edition, and it's been a life saver on many occasions. Great book.

Does anyone (whether the general public, or anyone at O'Reilly) know when the next edition will come out, and whether it will cover BIND 9.x ?

I have been using it on an almost daily basis.

This is an excellent, educational, USEABLE book. I recently got a job at an ISP,

and it seems like 75% of my work revolves around DNS. I really need to learn and know DNS and BIND. DNS problems are often subtle and difficult to track down, and I am using this book on a daily basis to help me learn my job. A big "Thank you" to Paul Albitz and Cricket Liu.

I am new to Linux and have to administer a dozen of Linux machines at work. After reading this book, I was able to set up a DNS server in less than 30 minutes! Thank you Oreilly!

O'Reilly did it again! DNS and Bind is very informative and resourceful book, the examples leave very few questions (if any) and the overall impression is good.

I recommend this book to anybody who doesn't know anything or just a little about DNS in general. You should read it just for fun even if you wouldn't set up a name server. The text is well written and enjoyable.

I recently set up production DNS servers with help of this book and it really was piece of cake. Thanks O'Reilly, and keep it up! (I know you will)

I recently upgraded my company's DNS to Bind 8, and this book was not only fundamental to my understanding of the new syntax, but absolutely vital to correct implementation and troubleshooting. It is a tremendous sequel to it's predecessor, which I orignally purchased 3 or 4 years ago. Thank you O'Reilly.

I took a quick look at Chapter 4 and with the help of the h2n perl script I had a fully functioning DNS server up and running in under 20 minutes.

I've ordered the third edition after reading a friend's copy of the first. The first edition is a fantastic help in understanding DNS and guide to installing it. It can't have gotten worse in the third edition, can it?

I HAVE READ THE DNS & BIND FROM OREILLY. IT COVERS THE VERY BASIC DETAILS, BUT IN A VERY COOL WAY. AFTER FINISHING IT, I AM MORE CONFIDENT IN DNS IMPLEMENTATION. THANKS A LOT, OREILLY..!!

Media reviews "This is a superb book concerning a popular subject and it's implementation. Anyone interested in DNS or how the Internet works should read this book. It is the definitive DNS and BIND reference. --Elizabeth Zinkann, Sys Admin December 1998
