The recommended site www.linuxforums.org is no longer a Linux site. It appears to be a scam site. Avoid it.

Last paragraph, starting with -w N

I believe that the command name "sort" in last sentence, "If used with -s or -f, sort will ignore...", should be replaced by "uniq", since it is talking about the -w option of the uniq command. It does not make sense to talk about the behavior of "sort" here, since -s and -f options have different meanings for sort and are not related to skipping a number of characters or fields.

Note from the Author or Editor:
(Note: in my book, this is page 107, not 105.) The submitter is correct. Under "Useful Options," the final option, "-w N", the second sentence currently reads:

If used with -s or -f, sort will ignore[...]

The word "sort" should be changed to "uniq" so it reads:

If used with -s or -f, uniq will ignore[...]

last paragraph

About md5sum, it states that "...it produces the 32-byte checksum..."

It should be a 16-byte checksum.

According to the md5sum man page and RFC 1321, MD5 outputs a 128-bit checksum. Making it 16 not 32 bytes, which is then displayed using 32 hexadecimal characters.

Note from the Author or Editor:
On page 118, in the section "md5sum", the second sentence contains the phrase "32-byte checksum". Change it to "32-digit checksum".

First line under section "ps2ascii"

The first line under the section "ps2ascii",

ps2ascii file.(ps|pdf)] [outfile.txt]

has an unmatched close square bracket. Is the open bracket missing (meaning the argument file.(ps|pdf) is optional) or is the close bracket redundant (file.(ps|pdf) is mandatory)?

Note from the Author or Editor:
(Note: in my copy, this error is on page 124.) The error report is correct. In the line indicated by the reporter, the stray right-square-bracket should be removed so the line reads:

ps2ascii file.(ps|pdf) [outfile.txt]

Heading of section "spell"

The heading for section "spell" shows "stdin stdout -file --opt --" in black, followed by "help --version" in gray.

1. As with all other headings, there should be a space between "-" and "file" as well as between "--" and "opt", which are currently missing.

2. "--help" is confusingly printed half black (for the dashes) and half gray (for the word).

Note from the Author or Editor:
(Note: In my copy, the error is on page 130, not 127.) The error report is correct. In the heading for the "spell" section, three changes need to be made. (1) Place a space between "-" and "file"; (2) place a space between "--" and "opt"; (3) In "--help", the initial "--" should be in grey, not black.

1st paragraph

regarding the 'at' command, it says:

"offsets are a plus or minus sign followed by whitespace and an amount of time: + 3 seconds,"

i couldn't get this to work so i checked online and apparantly at does not support seconds as a time increment

Note from the Author or Editor:
[Note: In the printed edition, the error is on the last line of page 154, not page 151.]

Change "+ 3 seconds" to "+ 3 days".
