You must configure your server as an Application Server before installing SharePoint Services. That installs Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 and ASP.NET, both of which are required by SharePoint. Do not install the FrontPage Server Extensions during this step, since they are not compatible with SharePoint. If you attempt to install SharePoint without these prerequisites, Setup will prompt you to install them.
