Note:

defaults write ~/library/preferences/.globalpreferences com.apple.swipescroll-direction -bool false

This terminal command does not work. It is unclear in the book whether the dash between swipescroll and direction is part of the command, or a hyphen, as the line splits here. But in either case it does not work.

Note

In the Terminal Crash Course bonus chapter, page 29, it refers to:

For details on ACLs, download this chapter?s free appendix, ?Access Control Lists,? from the ?Missing CD? page at www.missingmanuals.com.

But I don't see any ACL appendix on the Missing CD.

Numerous, beginning with the first paragraph

In the Terminal Crash Course bonus chapter, there are numerous references to iChat, but iChat doesn't exist in Mountain Lion. These references should be changed to Messages.

3rd para from bottom

The text says to visit www.macosxautomation.com, a site "maintained by Apple's Services/Automator/AppleScript team." However, this site is NOT in any way supported by or hosted by Apple. This page is also linked from the missing CD page for this book. It does not contain or lead directly to a download page with ready-made Services. So, I'd really like to know how to get to such a download page. And the link really ought to be corrected.
Thanks.

entire section on "Dial-Up Modem Connections"

The entire section explains that a dial-up modem can indeed be made with Mac OS X Mountain Lion, and refers the reader to the free appendix, "Setting Up a Dial-Up Connection" available on the book's "Missing CD" page at www.missingmanuals.com.

I downloaded the "Setting Up a Dial-Up Connection" pdf from the web site. It states...

"Open System Preferences and click Network. If your modem isn?t already listed, click the + button at lower left; from the Interface pop-up menu that appears, choose External Modem, and then click Create."

The Interface pop-up menu does NOT list External Modem as an option.

I would have included a screen-shot of this if there were an option to do so.

Any assistance (since I live too far out in the country and high speed internet access is not available) would be greatly appreciated.

Troubleshooting Moment, Journaling, 6th paragraph

I interpreted the second sentence to mean that journaled format cannot be used on both the main hard drive and an external FireWire drive. But after careful reconsideration of both sentences, together, another interpretation seems possible: Perhaps journaled format on both drives is the unstated norm, and the second sentence merely mentions acceptable alternatives.

In either case, I would appreciate confirmation because I'll be moving from my old eMac to a new iMac in a few days, and don't know whether or not to reformat my external FireWire drives.

By the way, this book is real gem!

11th paragraph

If the restore tab is clicked with the InstallESD.dmg file is highlighted a restore error will occur.

You must click on the InstallESD.dmg name and then choose open from the icons at the top of the dialog box. Then select the name under the InstallESD.dmg name. Then click the restore tab.
