Concerning Registry Patches

In the discussion and example at the top of page 120, if you put the minus sign
inside the left bracket (instead of outside) the key and its subkeys will be deleted
and there is no security feature in WinXP for this case, and thus the statement that
to remove an entire branch which has subkeys is "typically only possible from within
a programming language" is completely false.

Example:

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareRealNetworks]

2nd paragraph, 1st bulleted item

The text reads, "Go to Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View tab, and turn off the Use simple file sharing option."

Problem is, there is no such check box in the dialog, nor such a term (or even close) in XP home edition SP2 help, nor can I find it in the registry. So, this is either fixed in SP2 and hidden, or was in fact incorrect in the first place.

next to last paragraph

The section "Local Users and Groups" is written (in fact, the entire section Managing Users, starting page 450) as though it applied to all versions of XP. In fact, the Local Users and Groups (lusrmgr.msc) is disabled in XP home edition, which is the largest selling by far, and, if attempted, will disable the unprivileged user's account, making it become group Guests.

Really, the book needs to be reviewed carefully with regard to differences between the editions of XP, as people can get into real trouble relying on advice from one edition of XP on another. MS is not amused, and can sulk quite effectively. This book, which purports to support people trying to fix problems for themselves and for others, serves none if it causes breakages like this.

2nd paragraph under topic, "Permissions and Security"

"...Simple File Sharing. Go to Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View tab, and turn off the Use simple file sharing option."

I *do* need to modify permissions, and bought the book hoping to find cogent advice on the miasma of redundant and contradictory permissions on NTFS, so I feel cheated.
