It turns out that /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist can also contain "startup items" ...

Symantec Antivirus starts its daemons with the following entries in that file:

The HP printer driver also installs an event handler that way and the LaCie Shortcut button daemon is in there too.

I had the devil of a time figuring the Symantec part out as I had to do an Archive and Install but the stupid daemons kept reappearing but were crippled.
