The URL printed as http://.missingmanuals.com/cds is incorrect in that a point (full-stop) immediately following // is superfluous.

The URL should be written: http://missingmanuals.com/cds

3rd paragraph

I have, on my iMac, "Google Sketchup" in italian language. Reading your book and choosing: "Sketchup"→ "Preference"→" Template", I can't obtain any "OK" button. It shows "OPEN" button and I ...am exposed in this window!
Can you help me?
Thank you very much!

One must click the Enter key to get these to actually activate. This is true on all entries into the Measurement dialog box. At least on my version 7 Pro this is the way I had to do it to get the dimensions to actually apply.

Tip

The key strokes for the Mac version of 'Select None' is given as Cmd-A.

It should be, as is correctly listed on page 48, point #3: Shift-Cmd-A.

Author describes selecting bench support; subsequent steps assume leg has been selected.

You must deselect the Materilas tool before the Esc key works as explained in this step. Pressing the Esc key as instructed does nothing in my version. First you must press the "space bar".

Subtitle and first paragraph

The author makes several mistaken references to the blue axis when he's really talking about the green axis. He's not "introducing the blue axis" in this section, as it claims in the subtitle--he's introducing the green axis. The blue or y axis isn't irrelevant to 2-D art(p.1, sentence 3) -- the green or z axis is. The green axis doesn't run up and down (sentence 4)--the blue axis does. (The blue axis is correctly identified as the axis that runs up and down in the first two sentences of this paragraph.) The blue axis doesn't run perpendicular to the 2-D drawing plane (sentence 5)--the green axis does.

In paragraph 2, the axes are properly identified.

Subtitle and first paragraph

I disagree with Michael C. Purdy.

The author defines the axis as (page 94):
Red - Left and right
Blue - Up and down
Green - Near and far

The author, at the beginning of chapter 2 about 2D drawing expects folks to draw from a "Top View", i.e., using the red and green axis. When he gets to chapter 3, he is in-fact introducing the blue (vertical) axis to the reader.

If one prefers to draw 2D drawings from a "Front View", i.e., using the red and blue axis, then one might think going to 3D is adding the green "depth" axis to the mix. This is apparently the way that Mr. Purdy thinks of it, but it is not the way the author is describing it.

Step 3 at the top of the page

Step 3 says:
Draw a rectangle in the top of one of the boxes, and then double-click the rectangle.

It should say:
Draw a rectangle in the top of one of the boxes, activate the push-pull tool, and then double-click the rectangle.

If one does not activate the push-pull tool, double clicking the rectangle only tries to draw another rectangle.

Step 3, middle of the page

Step 3 says:
With the Move tool, click one of the points and move it up and down.

It is important (when step 5 comes around) that the reader actually finish the move in step 3 such that the top surface of the object is no longer parallel to the red/green plane. I.e., they must actually click to put that point in a new location. (Not just move it up and down and then abandon the command.)

If one doesn't, then step 5's attempt to move the surface in the red or green direction is not prohibited because that move doesn't require an auto-fold.

step 5 through 18 (on the next page)

This entire section doesn't do a good job of indicating when to _release_ the shift key to stop an inference lock and allow the new line along the next axis to be drawn. For example, step 7 should be "Release the shift key and position the cursor so the rubber band line is aligned with the red axis." If one continues to hold the shift key from step 5, one can't do step 7.

Kindle edition - Item numbered "1." immediately below the caption for Figure 4-20.

The line ends with "Different faces are high-" and does not continue on the following page - information is missing.

The item numbered "2." begins at the top of the next page (both pages are numbered "Page 146 of 527" in this edition).

1st paragraph

The text says "When you select the face of a shape like this rectangle, SketchUp automatically selects the edges that define the face."
Did not work. When I clicked on the face, only the face was selected. I had to double click on the face to also select the edges.

Left to Right selection is called a Crossing Selection in the book and it should be called a "Selection Window" per Google's video (Toolbar_Select_Download.mov, 00:01:30).
Right to Left selection is called a Window Selection in the book and it should be called a "Crossing Window" per Google's video (Toolbar_Select_Download.mov, 00:01:15).
The book has them switched as far as what it is calling them, the descriptions of what is going on is correct.

On page 196 the text split into PC and Mac variations. On that page there was an instruction for Mac users to jump ahead to page 207. On page 207 after the PC instructions were completed, and before the Mac instructions started, I would have expected an instruction for PC users to jump ahead to page 219.

On both pages it is mentioned that one can double-click text on a layer that is locked to edit the text. I was not able to do so on either my Windows or Mac computer and have tried numerous times. In my experience, the layer MUST BE UNLOCKED FIRST before you can edit the text.
