section 3.3.3.1

This paragraph describes LBA as linear byte addressing. I believe it
should be described as logical block addressing.

The fourth paragraph implies that the fips utility is contained on the Windows 9x CD-ROM. It is in fact on the included Red Hat CD-ROM

In the third paragraph, starting with "Do not remove the..."

Task: partitioning hard disk, using "fips", to allow linux to use
the new partition.

The text states that the user should copy three files to the diskette,
but the diskette (Win98 start - up disk) does not contain enough
space for the three files, and only "restorrb.exe" is copied.

"fips.exe" and "errors.txt" are not copied from the linux cd to the
diskette, as they should be.

I can't create the partition and install linux.

version of the book: September 1999, First Edition.
version of windows: Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.1998
running on intel PentiumII with 128mb ram,10gb disk.

The text tells people with SCSI CD-ROM drives to create a second floppy diskette called the supplimental diskette.
Unfortunately, the supp.img file referenced does not exist, at
least on the CD-ROM that came with my book.

You mention the PCMCIA support disk image on p. 39. I believe that the correct name of the file is:

imagespcmcia.img, not imagessupp.img

Is this the right file to use?

First paragraph under the "tip" imagessupp.img does not exist on the CD. This matches what I read on your
"unconfirmed errata". This is on the Sept 1999 first edition.

Could you please tell me what I need to do to complete the installation of
the product, that being the whole point here?

Under Size heading at top of page.

When specifying swap drives, shouldn't the swap drive generally be
double your ram, up to 128 Mb swap?

Last paragraph

"The Select Packages dialog box, shown in Figure 3-18, appears"
In fact Figure 3-18 shows the Select Group dialog box.

Second bullet point from top of page

Netware printers are missing

(60/61) Under heading "Configuring a remote printer"
Netware printers are again missing.

First paragraph, the book says:

Disable the NIS option and enable both the Use Shadow
Passwords and MD5 Passwords options.

I think a comment or explanation as to *why* would be useful.
This is a great opportunity for the book to add value.

Under the heading "Creating a Boot Diskette"

Here the book just rehashes well known information.
Again I think this is a great spot for the book to add some value.

Listed under 'Devices'

(table 4-2) ftape/rft_ and nftape/nrft_ are listed incorrectly. The man
page for MAKEDEV lists these device labels opposite of how your book
lists them.

Description for "sdxn" Device listing in Table 4-2, second line.

The Discription for this Device contains a spelling error.

The second line reads:
"example, sda1 is the first partition of the firs SCSI hard drive)"

The word "first" is spelled "firs"

last paragraph, the explanation under "Type" says the type of file

can be "directory" or "ordinary file". But it can be "link", "socket",
"block special", "character special" as well.

Third paragraph, the description of Figure 4.4 is missing Owner.

Also, the description headings do not match Figure 4-4.

first paragraph

The website for obtaining the free version of StarOffice
(http://www.stardivision.com) mentioned on page 184, first paragraph,
cannot be accessed. However, Version 5.2 of StarrOffice can be downloaded
from the http://www.sun.com/products/staroffice site. But the downloaded
file has a complete different and misterious name
(so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin.netzip) compared to the name mentioned on page
186, paragraph 3. It cannot be decompressed with the usual decompression tools.

Table 9-2, Snes9X entry

The text in the Description column of this entry states that this emulator
"Allows you to play Nintendo64 games on a PC." This is incorrect, Snes9X
is an emulator for the Super Nintendo 16-bit system, and does not includes
support for N64 games.

In line 12 in there is a mistake. The text reads

"Starting Samba
To start Samba, you must add three lines to the file /etc/inet.d."
^^^^^^
It should be:

"Starting Samba
To start Samba, you must add three lines to the file /etc/inetd.conf."
^^^^^^^^^^

The book claims that to install Doom from the oreilly cd you enter the following command

rpm -ivh doom-*.rpm

however, this package has the following dependancy

aout-lib

I cannot find this anywhere, I have reinstalled the system installing
everything and it still fails to install this package.

Anonymous
Printed Page 319

I also could not install doom due to a failed dependency on aout-libs which apparently resides in none of the packages on the
CD nor is it easily located on the web.
