Full Description
Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell is an indispensable quick reference for Java programmers who are writing applications that use graphics or graphical user interfaces. The author of the bestselling
Java in a Nutshell has written fast-paced introductions to the Java APIs that comprise the Java Foundation Classes (JFC), such as the Swing GUI components and Java 2D, so that you can start using these exciting new technologies right away.
This book also includes O'Reilly's classic-style, quick-reference material for all of the classes in the
javax.swing and
java.awt packages and their numerous subpackages. This reference material covers all of the new JFC classes in the Java 2 platform, as well as the existing Java 1.1 AWT classes. Once you've learned about the JFC, you'll keep this book next to your keyboard for handy reference while you program.
Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell contains the following:
- An overview of the architecture of graphical user interfaces built with both the new Swing API and the older AWT
- An introduction to the important components and application services provided by the Swing API
- An comprehensive explanation of the features of the new Java 2D graphics API
- A complete quick reference for the graphics- and GUI-related classes in the Java 2 platform
This book is part of the two-volume set of quick references that every Java programmer needs. It is an essential companion to
Java in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition, which covers the key nongraphical APIs in Java 1.2. A third volume,
Java Enterprise in a Nutshell, focuses on the Java Enterprise APIs and is of interest to programmers working on server-side or enterprise Java applications.

This book is excellent.
Add this and Java in a Nutshell to your collection an you can sit down and begin some serious programming without the added hours of API lookup.
It is not a tutorial
It is just a reference and what a bloody good one.
Swing and the AWT are hard to visualise as packages but with the handy pictures you can finally get your GUI to take advantage of polymorphism.
I bought this and Java in a nutshell when beginning to learn java, they didn't help that much in the early days but 2 years later they are all I need.

This book is an Add-On to the Java In a Nutshell book. Most people would be best off to buy the above, this book, as well as Java Examples in a Nutshell.

"The O'Reilly Nutshell series has become an essential guide for busy systems administrators and programmers and
Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell is no exception. The no-nonsense introduction to API basics brings experienced programmers up to speed on the Java Foundation Classes, while the quick-and-dirty coverage of legacy Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT), Java 2D, and the new Swing API provide a solid background. These sections alone would make
Java Foundation Classes a useful companion -- but the quick reference, weighing in at over 600 pages, makes it an indispensable tool for anyone working with Java." --Indigo.ca, Jan 2000
"If you use the Java Foundation Classes in the least, you may find yourself looking for a quick reference you can tuck away in a nice, small location, ready to call on when you forget which class or method to use in your project. O'Reilly's Nutshell series is targeted at this kind of quick-reference use and Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell delivers what you'd expect from the series. The investment is modest and tends to pay off when you save time looking for relevant information while programming. Whether you think this is a good buy or not depends on your working habits. If you like to reach for a book just to juggle your memory while working with Swing and/or AWT, this book is a must for you... this is an excellent purchase. The book's quality is high, the material is accurate, the book's format is useful, and the book is generally handy to have around while you work." --Claude Duguay. Devx.com, March 2000
