Full Description
The Nicholas Effect is the touching and transcendent book by Reg Green, father of Nicholas Green. Nicholas was the little boy from Bodega Bay, CA, who was shot in Italy and whose organs Reg and his wife, Maggie, donated to seven Italians. This act led to an outpouring of love by the people of Italy, a sharp increase in organ donor rates, and a deluge of media attention, both overseas and in the U.S.
"The Nicholas effect" is how his parents refer to the wonderful things that people do in response to hearing Nicholas' story. People look inside themselves to see what they can give back to the world. Depending on their circumstances and talents, they start scholarships, dedicate parks or schools, write poems or stories, or simply hug their children more often.
Reg and Maggie Green have appeared on countless stages, TV studios, and newspaper front pages. Their actions have been honored by presidents, army generals, and religious leaders. The story of Nicholas has been a made-for-television movie, starring Jamie Lee Curtis. Four years after the death of Nicholas, the movement of remembrance and action has, if anything, gathered in momentum.
The Nicholas Effect gives people a chance to learn more, both about this amazing family and about the people of the world who have shown their love for Nicholas. Reg Green, a journalist, speaks from his heart in accessible and eloquent prose. His willingness and openness in sharing with the rest of us is a gift. The event that spawned the movement was a sad one, but the story of the world's response is life-affirming.

What a fantastic and generous way to get the word out about organ donation! My 44 year old sister had a double lung transplant six months ago, and is doing wonderfully. She had a degenerative lung disease that had severely limited her quality of life. I know this wonderful book will make great strides in educating the public about the need for organ donation. Thank you for sharing your experience and for the gifts you gave.

Working for an organ procurement organization, I have considered myself fairly knowledgeable about the Nicholas Green story and many others I have encountered. Reading this book, however, has served to increase the depth of my own knowledge of the process an organ donor family goes through. I feel that I've been given a glimpse of the inconceivable emotions that a family struck by such a senseless tragedy goes through. I wish to express my thanks and appreciation to the Green's for becoming crusaders for this cause. I feel that I'm truly experiencing the Nicholas Effect on a daily basis.

"As a 'collegiate writing-for-publication instructor' for 30 years, I can think of no book that surpasses
The Nicholas Effect in opening the heart and changing attitudes for the common good throughout the world." --Bud Gardner, Editor,
Chicken Soup for the Writer's Soul
"This luminous story of extraordinary people who made a world-changing decision is filled with grace and strength and, unexpectedly, joy. The Greens have shown us, as they say in baseball, the way to be." --Killian Jordan, Senior Editor,
LIFE magazine
"When Nicholas Green was shot to death in Italy, the world reacted with horror. After his parents donated his organs to seven very sick Italians, their gift sent an electric charge through the human spirit. Now for the first time, Reg Green speaks about his son's death. This book is a story of grace, dignity and how one family turned senseless tragedy into a life-affirming gesture." --Robert Kiener,
