Full Description
Anyone faced with the task of setting up and managing a large number of workstations quickly learns the limitations of a graphical user interface. Ashley Meggitt and Matthew Lavy manage the LAN at Jesus College, Cambridge, and they've developed a number of scripts and techniques to bypass the GUI limitations and administer the workstations centrally. The result is
Windows NT Workstation Configuration and Maintenance, the only book on the market to focus on automating the management tasks you perform daily to keep a large workstation farm up and running.
Instead of trying to provide one-size-fits-all solutions to what are in reality site-specific kinds of problems, the authors concentrate on the techniques you need to master to keep your workstations under control. Their step-by-step approach shows you how to implement Perl scripts to take care of your particular problems. Topics include:
- Running scripts without user intervention
- Remote script installation
- Controlling services and drivers
- Machine-specific settings
- Changing network identity
- Perl modules and functions
Windows NT Workstation Configuration and Maintenance is an indispensable tool for the busy NT system administrator.

This book is a real gem, as far as it goes, but it falls short of what it could have been. Automated scripting and registry management are great, but I would have liked to have seen much more examples of scripting. I think we've all seen the delete c:\temp example too many times and some ideas on time synching, software installs via scripting, and printer and profile management would have been welcome. Worth having, but it's so narrow in it's content it should have been a) twice as thick or b) half the price to be really worth recommending. I will of course, use everything in it, but it left me wanting more....

A superb book, I read it from cover to cover and gained a great deal from its contents. The Authors clearly know their "Onions" and more importantly are capable of imparting their knowledge so even people like me can understand A must have for all those NT/Perl administrators out there!

A great book. I loved the way the authors don't just give a list of solutions but actually explain how to work things out for yourself. This book is the solar plexus of 20th Century computing literature!
