Full Description

This unique guide for ovarian cancer gives women crucial medical information to improve the chance for lengthy remission and cure, as well as emotional support for the journey. Although many ovarian cancers are discovered after they have spread, having information about surgery and best practices can be life-saving. For example, choosing a surgeon from the new specialty of gynecologic oncology for staging and de-bulking surgeries strongly impacts survival. Women need to at least consider newer chemotherapy and biological treatments in research trials. Women also want to hear the stories of others who live with the ambiguity of remission. Ovarian Cancer includes:
  • Ten things to know at the time of diagnosis, for optimal outcome
  • How choosing a gynecologic oncology surgeon impacts survival
  • When and how you can consider newer treatments, now in clinical trials
  • Stories of dozens of women living with ovarian cancer, some for many years
  • "Questions for Your Doctor" for all decision points
  • A focus on epithelial cancers, the most common and difficult to treat, with additional information on germ cell, sex cord-stromal cell, and low malignant potential ovarian cancers
Noted cancer writer Kristine Conner and patient advocate Lauren Langford provide ovarian cancer patients with a supportive and much-needed resource.

As a gynecologic oncology nurse, I believe this is a book that every woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer should have. It makes such a wonderful resource for these women to have at all stages and phases of living with the disease.

Media reviews "Ovarian cancer is one of the deadliest cancers because of its generally late diagnosis (the symptoms don't really appear until the cancer has spread beyond the ovaries) and the lack of screening tests. Health writer Conner and Langford, an ovarian cancer survivor, have written a great patient education book for the recently diagnosed. Sections cover finding a doctor, getting a second opinion, reading your own diagnosis, and dealing with everything from health insurance to end-of-life issues. Particularly nice are the lists of actual questions to ask your doctor and '10 things to do now' once you've been diagnosed. Perhaps a little too detailed for many lay readers, this work will nevertheless fulfill the needs of someone seeking all the information possible on the disease. While many general cancer books mention ovarian cancer, few focus on it exclusively, so most libraries will want to add this to their collection. Recommended for public and consumer health libraries."
--Library Journal

"A very well researched, well written guide for the individual with ovarian cancer and her family, caregivers, and others. This book can be used as a reference or read in its entirety for those that need in depth information."
--J. Max Austin, Jr., M.D., President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists 2002-3.

"This is the best book of its type ever written--an absolutely essential resource for patients or families concerned about ovarian cancer. The authors have done a true service for women with ovarian cancer."
--Stephen Rubin, Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania
