Full Description
Web Design in a Nutshell contains the nitty-gritty on everything you need to
know to design Web pages. It's the good stuff, without the fluff, written and
organized so that answers can be found quickly. Written by veteran Web designer
Jennifer Niederst, this book provides quick access to the wide range of front-end
technologies and techniques from which Web designers and authors must draw.
It is an excellent reference for HTML 4.0 tags (including tables, frames, and
Cascading Style Sheets) with special attention given to browser support and platform
idiosyncrasies. The HTML section is more than a reference work, though. It details
strange behavior in tables, for instance, and gives ideas and workarounds for using
tables and frames on your site. Web Design in a Nutshell also covers
multimedia and interactivity, audio and video, and emerging technologies like Dynamic
HTML, XML, embedded fonts, and internationalization.
The book includes:
- Discussions of the Web environment, monitors, and browsers
- A complete reference to HTML and Server Side Includes, including browser
support for every tag and attribute
- Chapters on creating GIF, JPEG and PNG graphics, including designing with the
Web Palette
- Information on multimedia and interactivity, including audio, video, Flash,
Shockwave, and JavaScript
- Detailed tutorial and reference on Cascading Style Sheets, including an
appendix of browser compatibility information
- Appendices detailing HTML tags, attributes, deprecated tags, proprietary tags,
and CSS compatibility

I could never imagine that so much useful information could be packed into a single nutshell edition. There is great coverage of every relevant issue concerning web design, and the book provides an accelerated look which is refreshing. This is by far the definitive source of information to which I regularly refer.

I recommend this to anyone who asks me for a book on HTML (and even those that don't but ask those basic HTML questions). This is my Web Design
bible - the one book I just wouldn't do without. Looking forward to new editions of this book with anticipation as those reference tables are a God send! There is going to be new editions of this book right? After all, if it covered the compatibility issues of the version 6 browsers it would be even better... age is the only thing wrong with this book now.

This is the first O'reilly book that i've bought and it's simply amazing! I've only learnt HTML for about half a year and knows a little bit of JavaScript. This book has revealed a lot of HTML tips and gave some useful JavaScript (but some of the scripts didn't work though, i needed knowledge from other JavaScript books to fix the scripts). The greatest thing i find about this book is that it gets to the point and you can easily find answers quickly. The format of the book with its rich content makes it such a great reference book, it's always by my computer, i bring it to school (i'm only 14 right now). It gives details on individual HTML tags and CSS plus some details on JScript. It also covers different picture, audio and video formats and include information on which programs to use and a whole load of other stuff. It also has a little on SSI. A great reference book, any webmasters should own a copy, the price is very reasonable as well.

A perfect starting point for anyone interested in web development! All to often when querying software developers/programmers about a solution, they'll bombarded you with buzzword after buzzword to try and explain the best way to fix your problem. Funny thing though is when asked to explain these state-of-the-art terms the developer often gives you very basic explanations of what the technology does like,
"It give you more control over style than HTML does -(CSS)". It's just this reason that this book is the
definitive starting point for anyone interested in web development! This book simply, yet effectively, explains how to best utilize the various technologies available to create an effective web site! You'll walk away much smarter on the subject than you came!

This was my first O'Reilly book, it got me hooked! I know that if I have a question about CSS, frames or forms all I need to do is reach out and get the answer from this book.
O'Reilly books are addictive. If I have a problem that needs a solution, I know that my local dealer (book) has a fix from O'Reilly. There really should be a payroll deduction for these books.

This was my first O'Reilly book I have purchased and I am quite impressed. This gives a nice overview of all the technologies in creating a web site. As a current Visual Basic and Active Server Page consultant/programmer I needed a book to assist me with HTML tags and a simple JavaScript reference as well as other web technologies. This one is great! I especially like the cross reference to other chapters when mentioning a subject or technique.

WHAT would this world be without your Nutshell books. This one is another masterpiece. I teach Web Site Design and will use Web design in a Nutshell for the practical aspects (I start with Information architecture for the World Wide Web by Rosenfeld & Morville for the "theoretical" aspects of Web design). Now ... may I rub the lamp and be granted one (only one) wish ? Could the author post an updated Table 1.1 titled "Browser support for Web technologies" when significant changes occur between major reprints ? That would be nice, would it not ?

Very Nice! It's refreshing to find a book with
all the knowledge I need arranged in an organized manner.
Most books on web design assume that if you don't already
know HTML, JavaScript, ActiveX, etc that you must be a
DUMMY. Niederst has done a wonderful job talking to her
audience in a one-on-one, non-condescending way.
In a single volume, she has condensed the material from
THREE of my previous references. She has my congratulations,
and my thanks.

O'Reilly already have Webmaster in a Nutshell and Web Design overlaps in coverage but the two titles are nonetheless complementary. Perhaps the forthcoming 2nd edition of Webmaster will sharpen the distinction. As it is Webmaster looks out from the server side, Web Design is more publisher/user presentation oriented - you probably won't need both.
Web standards change fast and some passages suggest the author was pushed to be both up to date (ie HTML 4) and in print - Some deprecated tags such as
are used in examples. Not, in my opinion, necessarily a bad thing; there are cases when style sheets are just too much overhead.
This book maintains O'Reilly's high reputation as the only computer books worth having. It does not condescend, it is not a bloated cookbook. It is a concise reference - and a useful revision tutorial - for people who know what they want to do, know it can be done, and just need to find out how.

I'm an New Media instructor, and I've been searching for a good book on which to base my lectures (and to suggest as a textbook for my students). For Web work, this is it! It's amazingly complete and very up-to-date, and the author's style and sense of humor make the material both informative and easy to read. I've recommended this book to many, many people, and will continue to do so. You want to own this one!

I recommend this book highly for anyone wanting to learn html. I like the reference style these books have. They provide you with the summary of the specific tags before going into the detailed examples of how to use it.
I have quickly become a big fan of the O'Reilly books for that reason.

This book is an intense hit of information. All the stuff I needed to know is here, without the flimflam of 'HTML - THe Definitive Guide'. There's very nice introductory stuff on broader technologies - like Flash and Real - although it will all be outdted before long, but then that's true of any printed reference.
If your a web designer, particularly if you code by hand or pay attention to different platforms, browsers etc, this is the ideal reference.

Bought this book to get some tips on how to avoid the most blatant design mistakes. The book is very fact-rich, the only gripe I have is the following: there are people out there who design their WWW-pages on non MS/Apple systems, but the book does not address those. Funny thing for a O'Reilly tome.
Apart from this, very much to be recommended!
