Book description

The most important change in Windows 2000 is the inclusion of Active Directory, a fully qualified directory service. It's such an important change that systems administrators are likely to find coming to grips with Active Directory to be one of their biggest headaches. But it doesn't have to be that way. Windows 2000 Active Directory puts you in charge of AD; it's an in-depth guide you will turn to whenever you need help, both before and after implementation.
Full Description

The most important change in Windows 2000 is the inclusion of Active Directory, a fully qualified directory service. It's so important that if you're a systems administrator, you're likely to find coming to grips with Active Directory to be one of your biggest headaches. But it doesn't have to be that way, thanks to Windows 2000 Active Directory.

Written by a participant in the Windows 2000 Rapid Deployment Program, Windows 2000 Active Directory delivers the practical, hands-on information you need to manage your site. Instead of filling pages with a screen-by-screen description of the graphical user interface, it focuses on the tasks you need to perform to manage your organization's directory effectively. The heavy emphasis on scripting with the ADSI will help you automate tasks to achieve greater reliability and save time.

Windows 2000 Active Directory is divided into three sections:

  • The Basics, which provides an overview of the Active Directory technology and a detailed introduction to AD features.
  • Design, which describes mapping your organization's typology into the Active Directory schema; specific topics include the AD namespace and DNS, AD objects such as sites and domains, replication, group policies, and migration issues.
  • Scripting, which covers the powerful capabilities of the Active Directory Services Interface (ADSI), including ADSI's use with ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), Active Server Pages (ASP), and Visual Basic (VB).

Windows 2000 Active Directory is a practical guide to the new technology for the overworked system or network administrator. Whether you're working regularly in the Windows 2000 environment or just evaluating Windows 2000 in order to understand the design issues involved, this book builds the solid foundation you need to understand Active Directory and use it effectively.

C'est un livre qui decrit bien les mecanismes d'AD, a savoir les notions de replications, l'extention de schéma, base des normes LDAP. Les scripts dans la partie III sont bien expliqués, mais qui ne sont plus encore adaptés a l'architecture .NET.

This is a fantastic book with sample code that solves many Windows 2000 problems. It is a must have for anyone working in a LDAP / Windows 2000 environment.

Yet another very good book from O'Reilly. A level much above the plethora of "just-an-introduction" books from the competition. But the title should include "ADSI" because half of this book is about it.

This is a very readable and thorough book. It gives a structure to allow the thought processes required in the design of an AD for an organisation to be formulated. I refer to this book often. The VB examples also demonstrate the power that can be unleashed for Administrators. Highly recommended!

Do you like being on the bleeding edge? This is a no nonsense book about the most significant change in NT since its inception. "Windows 2000 Active Directory" is a well documented and thought out work to prepare us for the highlights and pitfalls of AD implementation.
Considering the dearth of material on the subject, even from Microsoft, this is a timely and useful work on the subject. Well done, Mr. Lowe-Norris!

There is no other book around the whole world which covers ADSI in this way. It gives very good fundamental knowledge and a lot of very useful example how to use ADSI effectivly in the real world.
I know this book from the pre-press in the Scripting Journal, but I was hot to buy the whole thing. That was a very good decision!

One of a kind book that does justice to
Active Directory Services Interfaces and
de-mistifies ASP programming using ADSI.

The material covered covers many tools, such
as password-changing web pages, account creation
scripts and notes on using WSH.

It is a good book to bring one up-to-date on
what Windows 2000 Server offers.

Media reviews "It is important that Windows 2000 administrators and technical support personnel quickly gain in-depth insight and understanding in how to plan, implement and support a 'Windows 2000 Active Directory.' This book will help you do that. In fact, not only will this book help you get up to speed with the new technology, it will also bring you beyond the basics, and into the arena of mastery, where you can begin Active Directory Scripting...I feel confident in recommending this book to administrators and technical support staff, especially if you are competent with NT Domain concepts and are preparing to move into the new realm of Active Directory. At the price, this book will save you hundreds of times its value down the road by helping you plan, implement and use Active Directory properly."
--Douglas Ludens, Focus on Windows

?This is a good book if you need to set up Active Directory under Windows 2000?
--Computer Shopper, Dec 2001

"A guide for system administrators to designing a reliable, scalable, and manageable Active Directory on the software for any size organization. Rather than describing the graphical user interface screen by screen, Lowe-Norris, who was part of the Windows 2000 Rapid Deployment Program, focuses on the tasks needed to manage an organization's directory effectively, heavily emphasizing scripting with the ADSI for automation."-Book News, May 2000
