Subject: Lotus Domino
Dear Tim,
Earlier there was a "Domino Programming in a Nutshell" book on the "Upcoming Titles" list. I found it has disappeared these days. Does it mean that you have dropped the plan to publish it?
Furthermore, I would like to hear your opinion on using Lotus Domino as a groupware [platform], against using Internet tools.
Thank you very much for your kind attention.
Best regards,
Victor Lee
Victor,
Yes, you're right that at one point we had a book called Lotus Notes Programming in a Nutshell on our editorial calendar, but it was cancelled. I wasn't happy with the draft that was turned in and neither were our technical reviewers.
We've now got another book in the works called Domino Administration in a Nutshell. It will be out in the spring. This book focusses not on application development, but on administration.
As to your question about whether or not to use Domino as a groupware platform vs. Internet tools, I am afraid I don't really have the experience to offer any kind of useful answer. Jon Udell's book, Practical Internet Groupware, makes a great case for what you can do with a "roll your own" approach and standard Internet tools, and I find his thinking on the subject fairly persuasive. But I've never actually tried to build groupware applications with Domino, and I imagine that there are people who are really excited about what they can do with the platform.
