Well designed and illustrated book (although I did not see the paper version of it). Beware the overly protective mentor with all those rules and constraints. Full Review >

Harnessing the Power of the Web

Luckily this book is not bounded to a certain version of a library and you can jump in and use what you needed. They learn you every detail in a correct way what Web API's are. How the architecture is build up. Not with dry theory but with good examples. Full Review >

Functional Thinking

Functional Thinking

Functional Programming using Java, Clojure and Scala

Geert's rating: StarStarStarStarStar 4.0

The first video series that I took was functional thinking. I was interested because it could inspire me to how to teach the best way to my fellow developers what functional programming actually is. As I and my fellow developers actually reside in the .NET world and these videos of Neal Ford are based on the JVM world I could not match it on a one-on-one. Neal explains every aspect very clear and concise. He starts with an overview and goes into every property of functional programming. Neal uses one example that he made in plain Java and shows how it can be done in a 'functional way'. Full Review >

The Book of F#

The Book of F#

Breaking Free with Managed Functional Programming

Geert's rating: StarStarStarStarStar 5.0

On Apr 9, 2014 Geert Van Laethem wrote: The clear book of F#
As the author mentions himself the book is written for people that are already familiar with the .NET ecosystem and you see clearly that he is coming from the C#. That is a good approach because most people who are interested in F# are coming from the other .NET languages. If you never worked with those you are going to have a difficult time understanding what is explained. Full Review >

I am happy that I selected this book. I thought it would be an easy read and review. No it was not. It was a clear and challenging book. It is a short one with only 100+ pages but it is pact with information and no page filler whatsoever. Full Review >

Real World OCaml

Real World OCaml

Functional programming for the masses

Geert's rating: StarStarStarStarStar 4.0

In analogy with the most famous book 'Real World Haskell' a new book with a known programming language (for me). I didn't know much about OCaml besides F# is based for the most part on it. I like F# a lot unfortunately I do not get the change in my professional life to use it. Anyway enough about F#, let's talk about its mother and more in particular this book. Full Review >
