The true test of any software is whether it increases or decreases the productivity of its users. In best cases, human-computer symbiosis results not only in better human decision-making but in positive feedback loops that make the computer side of the system stronger as well over time.
Search-based interfaces for data analytics provide a familiar way for people to quickly find, aggregate, and analyze the data they need. At the same time, they can also improve the capacities of the computer, as users discover and define new identities, objects, and relationships, and the machine in turn understands what is more important to the user.
A well-designed search solution maps users' ontologies to the properties of the data, giving expected and useful results. It returns results instantly to allow for iterative questioning from the user, and scales to any size of data with the end goal of answering any question the user has. This is a radical departure from the traditional creator/consumer model in today's dashboard-driven business intelligence environments.
