Followed Instructions EXACTLY. Parental Controls Window is precisely as indicated in the book however when I followed the 2nd instruction, a dialogue box opened with the following message: Sign Into Windows LIVE Family Safety with boxes for User Name and Password/or Create a New Account for my Child to receive 'Safe' email.
I re-read material, rechecked everything and still cannot figure out why my results are different than what the book says. Came to this website expecting that the book was in error.I cannot figure out how to setup Parental Controls for folks who choose NOT to participate in email accounts. Any clues as to why Microsoft is trying to get me to open a new email account while you are trying to teach me Windows7?
Note from the Author or Editor: MS has changed the way they're instituting parental controls and rendered the entire exercise (pages 56-59) invalid. I'd suggest that we remove the first graphic on page 56 to make space and insert a Troubleshooting readeraid immediately before the exercise that says "Since the time this book was written, parental controls have become part of Windows Live Family Safety. To set up parental controls, complete step 1 of the following exercise and then sign in to Windows Live Family Safety by using your Microsoft account (previously called a Windows Live account). Then choose the account you want to monitor. This turns on Family Safety monitoring for your computer. You can then return to the User Accounts window and click any account to access Family Safety and configure the types of parental controls that are described in the exercise."

4th paragraph. Information on this page is of no help. |
I was directed to support.microsoft.com to enter the ISBN of my step by step book, but there is no place to enter that information on that page.
Note from the Author or Editor: Since the time this book was printed, responsibility for the errata reporting system has moved from Microsoft Press to O'Reilly Media. Microsoft Press apparently has not provided information about this change on the Microsoft Help And Support site.
The entire section titled Getting Help with This Book and Its Companion CD should be replaced with the new support information, as follows:
Section title: Getting Help with This Book
Normal paragraph: If your question or issue concerns the content of this book or its practice files, please first consult the book's errata page, which can be accessed at:
Setoff line: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Linkid=203094

Additional query to O'Reilly from author: Do you want to modify the standard text to instruct readers to log bugs through the O'Reilly site?

Towards the end of the second sentence it says "... to give control the computer." This needs to be reworded for clarity but I am not certain what word(s) the authors would prefer.
Note from the Author or Editor: On page 4, in the first para, please change "to give control the computer" to "to control the computer"

Screen shows that the folder is "Load Files". Tip states that the screen shows the contents of the "Downloads" folder. This didn't help me to understand folders.

The caption says that file names can be listed in alphabetic order. Starting with Windows XP, the default order for file names is alphanumeric. This means that numbers in increasing file names also increase. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319827/. This discrepancy also appears in the following locations: p.151, 1st paragraph; p. 159, 3rd paragraph; p. 169, last line; and p. 171, 11th paragraph.
Note from the Author or Editor: Please change the word "alphabetic" to "alphanumeric" on pages 129 (image caption), 151 (1st para), 159 (step 25), 169 (last para), and 171 (step 12 result para).

Note from the Author or Editor: In Chapter 5, on page 178, please remove the second and third sentences of the Tip so that it says only "Tip Compressing is frequently referred to as zipping." (Retain the existing formatting.) Then adjust the height of the sidebar box to fit the shortened sidebar.
