Architecture should give the
necessary flexibility
The changes in social patterns, habits,
and technology in our lives are
increasingly rapid and intense. But
architecture is usually very inflexible
with respect to future adaptations: the
combination of a double skin façade
with external communication nuclei
was the solution used in the Viladecans
Business Park.
0202
Compact the city
The oil slick growth of many Spanish
cities during the last decades is not
sustainable from any standpoint.
Compacting our cities with vertical
growth in specific areas is an important
formula for urban regeneration. Our
proposal for the old Repsol warehouse
in central Malaga, is a prime example
of this technique.

Incorporate graphic design into
architecture
Buildings with signs all over telling you
what to do and what not to do can be
bothersome. Graphic design brings joy
and relaxation to architecture and can
be accompanied by industrial designs
that contain symbolic elements of the
building.

Functional promiscuity is a key to
the future
Our historic Mediterranean cities based
their success on a mixture of uses,
which in recent decades has been lost
with the growth of strong mono-
functional ghettos. We believe it is
important to design cities and buildings
with promiscuous functions, and that
sustainability also stems from the
extensive use of buildings. Las Arenas
is one example where culture, leisure,
sport, commercial, and office space
coexists.
0203
The importance of the 5th façade
The forgotten 5th façade, the roof
of the building, often visually abuses
and mistreats its environment. A
poorly ordered storeroom to store
systems and machinery. A minimum
of architectural sensitivity helps to
convert it into a real façade.

Externalize vertical communication
elements and services
Something as simple as preserving the
useful area of the building and
externalizing stairwells, elevators,
pipes, services etc., adds value to the
architecture as it gives great flexibility.
0206
Use double skin façades as a
sustainable, flexible element
On one side, this provides the sun
protection that is so necessary in
Spain, on the other, it gives modular
flexibility to the interior skin. A wide
range of materials and solutions can be
used, including silkscreen glass,
ceramics, wire mesh, stainless steel,
and more.

Use water as a landscaping element
This urban spa in Barcelona has
extraordinary views of the adjacent
park, with a stainless steel pool that
overflows on the side facing the park,
achieving an effect of a reflected
landscape without limits. This forms an
extension of the park inside the Sports
Center.
0209
Use the defining characteristic of a
city and its landscape
Every city has a characteristic that
defines, differentiates, and
characterizes it: a smell, a sound, or a
color. That was the case in Peñafiel,
whose view from the historic castle was
a reddish-brown, typical of tiled roofs.
We opted for a solution to ceramically
coat the vaults, which are visually
integrated into
0208
Expose systems
Serious problems in maintenance and
repairs are common and these systems
unfortunately tend to be installed
behind false ceilings and floors.
We try not to conceal these systems,
but instead to enhance them through
correctly locating them, and, in some
cases such as the Hesperia Tower,
locate them near the center of gravity
of the building, thereby saving energy.
