Explore form
The organic envelope of this design
proposal for the National Symphonic
Concert Hall and conference center
cloaks a sequence of complex and
curvilinear interior volumes, partly
inspired by the shape of the symphonic
instruments to be found in this venue.
0364
Building on contrast
The aim of this project was to provide
an optimal physical environment in
order to encourage fellowship and
cooperation in a folk high school, where
educational and social aspirations form
an integral part of the curriculum. The
building has been designed to connect
the folk high school with the town by
offering a vibrant setting for the local
community, including cafés, a music
theatre, cinemas, and a media centre.
0363
A luminous sculpture
The glazed façade is constructed with a
mesh of stainless steel, which reflects
the continuously changing daylight.
During the dark days of the Icelandic
winter, integral lighting dramatically
enhances the opulent and dynamic
interior, which can be seen as a
glowing, organic unit by visitors
approaching the building.
0365
Building in motion
After night falls, the interior lights
shine through the circular apertures
incised into the façade, transforming
the building into an animated beacon
shining its light over the surroundings.
The building therefore appears to be
in perpetual motion, becoming a
“performer.

Inner court: public square
The building’s heart is a vast atrium, a
high-tech and innovative public space
which also operates as a covered public
square complete with hanging terraces,
water features, trees, and flowers: an
inviting place that both creates and
reflects the civic life of the community.
The Danish artist Anne Marie Ploug
has collaborated with Schmidt Hammer
Lassen to design the atrium’s internal
screen decoration, which takes the
form of suspended foliage, inspired by
the feel of the Amazonian jungle.
0367
Expressing materials
This building is a celebration of its
components; its internal, ducting, and
ventilation systems are honestly
expressed. Externally, the new building
is clad with boldly perforated rust-red
steel panels.
0366
An open-open office
A flexible office building has a central
atrium that doubles as an internal
public square; open 24 hours a day.
This public space connects to the
Karlinska Nam Park and the leafy river
promenade beyond. Typical Prague
paving stones are laid throughout
the square in order to reinforce its
connection with the city.
0369
Dynamic synergy
The school’s dynamic design, with its
four distinct axes, is intended to create
opportunities for academic exploration,
knowledge sharing, and social
interaction right across the student
community, as a visual metaphor
honoring the ethos of the man after
whom the school is named.
0371
Atrium vortex
The rotational effect and plate
displacement creates outdoor terraces,
while providing internal visual
connections between the floors. The
lift and twist effect created by this
rotation also forms a central space that
widens toward the top, increasing the
natural light flooding into the building.
0370
Stacking program
The layered design for the new Thor
Heyerdahl Upper Secondary School is
simple but effective, clustering its
various elements in a compact, flexible,
and vertically oriented building. The
main structure comprises an open
square plate into which openings have
been incised, allowing natural light to
penetrate deep into the building. A
corresponding plate above is turned
180 degrees on the building’s axis,
creating a series of single and double
height spaces.
