The Agora Building in Strasbourg
considers both urban and natural
existing fabrics; it is the missing link
that fosters the European district’s
town-countryside relationship. The
concept maximizes the potential
offered by microclimates, sun, wind,
water, greenery, and underground
conditions in order to increase comfort
while reducing energy consumption
and maintenance requirements.
Atria, internal streets and generous
staircases are used to give the complex
both conviviality and radical contact
with its surroundings.

Art & Build—from master
planning to interior design, a humanistic
approach to architecture
0771
The project’s creators adopted a very
bold approach to the competition,
seeking to develop the principles of a
hyper-ecological architecture with the
least possible impact on the site and to
incorporate water recovery and natural
climate control. Designed like trees, the
buildings absorb geothermal energy
from the ground, and solar and wind
power from the canopy.

The workplace as living space: the
creation of complementary office and
social spaces provides the flexibility
to meet the varied demands of the
market, and also has the potential to
bring the concept of 'city living' into
the workplace. The office building
becomes an integral part of the
neighborhood; its corridors are like
streets, it communal areas like plazas.
Vertical transit spaces are areas for
meeting and interaction; all in contact
with the external environment.
0773
Internal spaces help to connect office
spaces, conference facilities, and
restaurants. The results create a
convivial environment where European
Nations representatives can meet and
work.
0772
Textile solar chimneys aid natural
ventilation by increasing both stack
and venturi effects in a response to
Strasbourg’s climate.

The glass roof covering the interior
street gives a view of the reception
area that is planted with trees, offering
a pleasant yet magisterial environment
and incorporating a water purification
process that recycles into the sanitary
system.
0776
Natural light and visual contact
promote conviviality and efficiency,
while providing additional working and
meeting spaces around a building’s
circulations.
0777
The interior garden providing natural
light in the heart of the project provides
an optimal working environment with
its dense and architectural varied
green spaces, and integrated islands
of greenery and mineral elements.

Preliminary studies for the project
focused on the subtle nuances needed
to create an individual identity that
would also blend in with the tone of
this business district. Attention was
also paid to the forms and materials of
an elliptical hall standing at the corner
of a central roundabout, marking the
center of the Brussels North District,
which functions as an entrance zone
and deconstructs the rigorous lines of
the surrounding buildings.

Set in a park dominated by truly
remarkable conserved trees, the Agora
Building’s day care nursery is dedicated
to the little ones.

treated as landscape, offers a very
user-friendly atmosphere for the 130
Art & Build collaborators.
