STEP ONE This example uses a textured, light-colored charcoal paper. Using a soft 3B charcoal pencil, establish the darkest values first. Use short, tapered strokes for the smooth fur. A soft charcoal pencil dulls quickly on textured paper; instead of constantly sharpening the pencil, turn the pencil slightly as you work to yield finer lines. (You can use this technique with graphite tips as well.)
