When you cut your film you will want to be able to run it at the speed at which audiences will see the finished film projected. You could use a projector to check with, but you cannot employ it as a viewer for the cutting process because the machine is not built to stand up to constant stopping and starting. The necessary performance is provided by special machine designed also to serve the various functions required in editing.
