Acknowledgments
This book has been a long time in coming. I took an Insight Transformational Growth seminar in
leadership training back in the 1990s, and one of the goals established for me was to write a book. While
I have written and published hundreds of articles and a few chapters in books by other people, Iresisted
writing a book about my own experiences and expertise. After the events of September11,2001, it
became obvious to me that there was little information available for design professionals and law
enforcement on security design and CPTED that was relevant in the age of terrorism and infrastruc-
ture protection, and what was available was either dated or mostly about security electronics and
military defense, not about the process of accomplishing a functional integrated security system and
crimeprevention.
I invited some of the brightest and most knowledgeable persons in the eld today to make con-
tributions to this book, as I feel that collaborative efforts are more enlightened than solo attempts.
Over the course of my career, many people have inspired and motivated me, but none were more
supportive than my parents. I spent 12 years in college, acquiring 4 degrees in architecture, criminal
justice, and criminology, and that could not have happened without the support and backing of my
parents, Fred and Janet Atlas. The person responsible for steering me into the unusual and unique
eld of blending of architecture with security was my uncle Rocky Pomerance, who was chief of
police for Miami Beach. Rocky gave me a copy of Oscar Newman’s Defensible Space just before
I attended college. He had successfully used CPTED at the Democratic and Republican National
Conventions that occurred in Miami Beach during the early 1970s. Even though there was protest-
ing and the usual mass movement challenges, he managed to keep operations smooth without the
riots or injuries or police overreaching that we would see in the following years at political conven-
tions in Chicago and other cities. I understood then, how I would combine my interests and educa-
tion in architecture, criminal justice, and criminology.
I would like to thank Trish Warren-Atlas for editing the book and keeping me on track for this
arduous project. Her efforts were tireless and are appreciated.
I would like to thank Florida Atlantic University, College of Design and Social Inquiry (Schools
of Architecture, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Urban Planning and Public Administration) for
allowing me to have a multidisciplinary course that teaches college students the merits of designing
for security in our cities using the CPTED process. The teaching experience over the last ten years
has allowed me to continually update my curriculum; change, expand, and inuence the perspective
of future architects, urban planners, and police ofcers; and stay forever young.
Gregory Saville wrote several chapters in the book, including Chapter 7, on second genera-
tion CPTED, and Chapter 18, on ATRiM for infrastructure protection. We cowrote Chapter 34,
“Measuring Success,” and Chapter 36, “Implementing CPTED.” Gerry Cleveland, an internation-
ally renowned youth crime prevention expert, was also codeveloper of second generation CPTED,
and his writings with Greg Saville are included in Chapter 7.
Severin Sorensen, CPP, is an accomplished CPTED expert and trainer, and we had the pleasure
of working together on many CPTED trainings for U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Severin and his associate, John Hayes, wrote Chapter 6, on the theory and concepts of CPTED,
drawing from the CPTED curriculum they authored for U.S. HUD in 1998.
W. Douglas Fitzgerald contributed his extensive security systems and electronics experience in
Chapter 5, “Interface between Architects and Engineers.”
Anthony DiGregorio is a pioneer in the eld of infrastructure protection and blast resistance.
Tony contributed his expertise to Chapter 10, “Terrorism and Infrastructure Protection,” and
Chapter 16, “Designing for Explosive Resistance.”
